Engineering Explained has lost his mind again.

I happened to see this. I will watch it after I catch up on schoolwork and notes, write twenty progress reports, put up curtains in the living room, and finish applying for health care.

Or at least determining whether the fine is more than one month's payment.

Enjoy!

If you do not enjoy it, be sure to complain to him!

I didn't hear anything factually incorrect in the video. He and I both enjoy manual transmissions for reasons outside of the drawbacks.

So am I a sucker for clickbait by watching the video and responding to this thread? Probably.

What - read the ... manual, but no buy? Freeloaders! :turtle: ;)

Nice clickbait, and quite informative.

All hail the torque converter?

I read the transcript and it sounds like he is describing far fancier transmissions than those you find in an Accord.

I have read many people say that they shift faster than an automatic and someone always responds "You can shift faster than my [$100,000 car]?"

Let's review that checklist:
Catch up on schoolwork: No
and notes: Yes!
Write twenty progress reports: No
Put up curtains in the living room: No
And finish applying for health care: I am waiting on someone else to process paperwork.

I am supposed to have three new clients today! I may have four tomorrow, but one was a no-show last week, which is awesome, because they live an hour away! We have another therapist that works with them and says calling ahead does not help.

This should be one of my best weeks in the three years that I have been doing this, but I am kind of busy! :)

Nothing shifts faster than the leaf transmission.

Didn't watch this video, but most of his videos are good. When it comes to manual transmissions, actually my only complain is having to use the clutch pedal. I'd rather have something similar to the Saxomat system which used to be fitted to many old European cars.

Single-speed electric. Tesla, Leaf, Arcimoto.

Now for the yang to the yin. :)

1) You don't get into better shape, because you have no way of getting to interesting places to hike, bike, cross-country ski, &c, and so you turn into a homebody couch potato. (OK, unless you happen to live in e.g. Switzerland...)

2) Cars don't have to cost a fortune, unless you insist on buying expensive (and gas-guzzling) new ones on credit, so that you have to make payments, carry C&C insurance, &c.

3) Not really. If you're stuck in a city, it's all too easy to forget that there's a real world out there, and that you depend on it.

4) Nope, unless you're idea of "community" is the very insular "things within walking/public transit distance".

5) Again, not necessarily. Car lets you go other places, where you can see more than your own insular bit of city.

6) Very much not so. Driving a car is not all that stressful, especially compared to say biking on city streets or narrow-shouldered roads.

7) No.

8) Very much not so. Unless you're into paying big bucks for exotic car rentals (or perhaps in Europe), what you can rent will likely be a low-end newish car with automatic transmission, stuffed with "infotainment" crap.

9) Well, some of us choose to be conscious, regardless of whether we own a car or not. If you don't, that's a personal problem :-)

10) Better example for the future is to drive low/zero GHG cars, rather than becoming one of the urban horde, for whom the environmental costs of their lifestyle is "out of sight, out of mind".
