EOC warning
Engine off coasting with motorcycles can ruin the transmission as many have engine oil pressurized lubrication systems as a ninja250 owner found out the hard way when coasting down on the dyno with the engine off.

Bummed today, I think I toasted my clutch
duly noted, guy says if you tow a ninja 250 without taking off the chain it will lock up within 10 minutes. Still it should be able to handle some coasting alternating with a running engine. |
Of course if the engine is idleing you should be able to let it coast out of gear for hours without causing any issues, right?
My Honda's have, for the most part, ball bearings on all of the shafts and the little bit of oil that is in there should be able to handle running with the few drops of oil that is left after you shut the engine off. |
I usually just pull the clutch lever in and coast in gear, with the engine running. Don't see how that could be a problem. I was thinking about shutting the engine off, but after reading this I am glad I didn't.

I'm not worried about it for coasting a block at a time. Why would it weld up with no load on it?

His trans made it for 30 seconds of coasting down on the dyno with the engine off. He tore it down and found 5th gear welded to the shaft. All of the other dyno videos I have seen show the rider blipping the throttle of a running engine all the while as they slowly brake the drum in order to lube the trans. Coasting at idle with the clutch in is no problem.

I often coast more than 30s with Teresa, both engine on and off, mostly with clutch in, rarely in neutral. I've been doing this for several tens of thousands of kilometers.
No problem so far, but she's a different bike, so it may not apply to the Ninjette (Teresa is a BMW F650CS). |
pressure lube
Some bikes use engine oil pressure to lube the trans. Some use a splash lube and wouldn't care about coasting with the engine off as much. If the trans seizes from EOC, it can lock the rear wheel sending you down.

Yes, any rider is aware of the ramifications of the engine or trans locking up (another reason why it is good to have the clutch on the output). I'm just trying to understand the conditions under which this happened and determine if the diagnosis is accurate, lots of folks have gone lots of miles EOC on bikes with no reports like this.
Also, you could provide some sort of link, leave off the http, so we are on the same page. The guy I read about was using nitrous on a 250 on a dyno, no suprise that stuff is breaking. |
