VW diesel mechanical injection Heads up

Just had a bit of fuelling issue - a while back i had a leak from the injector spill-offs well the replacement 'get you home' ones that the RAC (like the AAA in the states, but ours is approved Her Maj) put on were so good I kinda forgot about them until this week when one rubbed through on the sharp edge of the injector. This filled the car with the pungent whiff of Shell's fuelsave Diesel, Pipe changed the car still stank and hand become lumpy and lacking in torque. Problem? the one pipe the RAC guy didn't change 5months ago was the spill-off return from inj4 back to the pump. TBH it looked and felt old, it even fell to bits as I removed it as it had a big hole in it and was dripping fuel into a nice dark part of the engine I hadn't noticed before. All this meant my FE dropped from 49MPG to 48MPG (shocking I know!)

Moral of the story – don’t rely on ‘get you home’ items other than to ‘get you home’ AND check all pipes in the system not just the ones leaking at the time. A length of Spill-off pipe cost about $4/yard and makes a hell of a difference to the feel of the engine – so its going to become a service item on my car and I’d recommend it to anyone else with a Mechanical injection VW diesel.

If you can check the break off pressure on those old injectors. It was about 1800 PSI on the same era Mercedes.

Typically the springs inside the injector assemblies get weak and the break off pressure drops to 1500 PSI which makes it run ruch and smoke due to poor atomization. You can shim the springs or replace them to get the pressures back up. That will get you better mileage and reduce the black exhaust smoke dramatically IF your pressures are low when you test them.

regards
Mech
