Expermintal FE meter, first pictures...

This is the prototype of my DFM7 gauge. The display doesn't photograph very well in low light. Four buttons are soldered on the underside of the board: Left, Right, OK and Cancel. I've run a program on it already that does a good job displaying MPG on my specific vehicle, but now it's time to implement a complete menu system so that I don't need to reflash it to make adjustments. In addition to the typical trip and tank mpg/distance/fuel consumption numbers, I'm adding a historical average that doesn't reset when you fill up. This will be useful for calculating economy over long periods of time.

trip reset is the most important to me, as gas goes up, it means shorter tests.

Looks pretty good so far!

Trip reset is accomplishied by holding down the left and right buttons simultaneously.

Some more info...

MCU clock speed: 1.00 Mhz
Injector sampling rate: 125 Khz
Display refresh rate: 1.9hz

Display screens:
Trip A: Up to 65 gallons with 1/1000 gallon resolution, up to 655mi 1/100mi resolution
Trip B: Up to 6553 gallons with 1/10 gallon resolution, up to 65Kmi 1mi resolution
Tank: Same fuel resolution/range as Trip A. Any need for more than 655 miles?

PaleMelanesian 05-22-2008 01:08 PM

I've gone more than 655, twice. Is it a big deal to change that? I'd be fine with 1/10 mi instead of 1/100 for the tank. That's all my odometer gives me, anyway.

JohnnyGrey 05-22-2008 04:01 PM

Yes, I can do 6553 miles with 1/10 precision. Now does anyone have a tank exceeding 65 gallons?

are there any of these DIY gages (like this one) that are easy to create for thoes of us who are not circut/programing savy? I know basic circut stuff, basic soldering, etc but have never made anything like that. I'm more the mechanical kind of guy.

I don't know what JohnnyGrey's plans are with his device, he has only announced that it is not open source. But there are a number of people working on the open source mpguino . The goal of that project is to put fuel consumption feedback into as many hands as possible (read cheap and easy), so if you take a look and post over there about where we lost you then you would actually be helping too :)

Thanks dcb, i looked over that post and helping develp that stuff is out of my leage. I'll just have to be a leach and attempt to build it after its 'perfected' or just get a sgII
