Extreme MPG Hypermiling Challenge - (3 Mitsubishi Mirages: Vegas to L.A.)

Don't know if this was posted already (haven't seen it), but I think you'll get a kick out of it.

Mitsubishi M irage Extreme MPG contest: And the winner is...

74 MPG. Not bad, considering no pulse-and-glide.

Yeah, but did you see the sign he used to explainhis slow driving? As a member of that organization I am offended. :turtle:

Cobb - That was funny. I never would have known if you hadn't said so. You don't type like you're a day over 30.

Not sure if this should go in the ecodriver's ed subforum or ecomodding central... lots of painter's tape mods: :D

Given the level of modification, I'd wager it all came down to the driver.

The numbers aren't really beyond the reach of your average joe, though. Even without the tape. All it takes is technique.

That said, I wonder if the local Mitsu would be willing to bankroll a publicity stunt run to try to beat those numbers with some cheap aero tweaks... hmmm....

MetroMPG 03-17-2014 12:55 PM

Agreed.

Not to take away from the drivers, but it kind of was a series of big pulses and glides (whether they knew it or not), with a really big (favourable) net elevation change:
  • Pulse: starting at ~3800 ft, climb to ~4200 ft.
  • Glide: descend to~1100 ft.
  • Pulse: climb back to ~4300 ft.
  • Glide: descend to ~sea level
The winner, Aaron Gold reported keeping it around 45-55 mph, and coasting his 5-speed manual car on the downhills.

Im a companion member, but some days I feel like Im in my 70s..

The first year CRX 1.3 (1984) managed 73 MPG at 55 without any P&G, 30 years ago. Same La to Vegas trip, might have been in the opposite direction.

That is really great. I enjoyed the read:thumbup:

I been temped to trade in my 2012 Wrangler for one of those 2014 Mirage manual gearboxed.

I wonder if you took a 2014 Cruze diesel vs. 2014 Mirage and both were hypermilled and taped, lightly ecomoded ect... who would win? Unfortuantely; the Cruze only comes in automatic here in USA.

You could also get yourself a pair of Mirages for the price of one Cruze diesel.

Somehow, if a dealer wanted to sponsor something like this, I think that they would put flat molding or something that would not look like painter's or duct tape.
