Federal Mogul Advanced Corona Ignition

Advanced Corona Ignition System (ACIS) by Federal-Mogul| Zigwheels.com

Federal Mogul is a respected name in the automotive field.

Their ACIS may improve fe by up to 10%, but not all by itself. The improvement comes from the enabling of lean burn, better ignition advance timing, and etc.

I don't think this is a unicorn.

FRANKFURT, September 13, 2011 … Federal-Mogul Corporation (NASDAQ: FDML) will introduce at this year’s IAA (Frankfurt Auto Show, Hall 4.1, Stand E15, September 13-16, 2011)
its highly innovative Advanced Corona Ignition System (ACIS), a breakthrough technology for fuel efficiency and emissions reduction that significantly outperforms conventional spark-ignition systems. Federal-Mogul’s ACIS is currently undergoing development with several customers and has enabled an up to 10-percent fuel efficiency improvement over standard spark ignition in development testing.
Corona ignition creates a significantly larger high-intensity plasma ignition source, spread throughout the combustion chamber, when compared to conventional spark ignition systems.
The ACIS technology provides for more thorough combustion and enables advanced combustion strategies like lean burn, highly diluted mixtures and very high exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), further increasing fuel efficiency. The company’s ACIS utilizes materials and design strategies to facilitate high-volume production implementation on current and new engine architectures.

I agree. I didn't know who Federal-Mogul was until I went to their website, but they look pretty big to me. 10% seemed high to me as well.

Question: Could there be some benefit in the sub-5% range for old cars like ours?!?!?

I would IMAGINE there could be some benefit but I sure wouldn't want to just claim that... that said, I would sure like to have a couple ACIS systems to play with so I could be their field test guinea pig!

Similar to the Pulstar plug????

Anyway, 10% gain would be great and I'm sure we'd all try to justify the price!

Frank Lee 02-13-2012 09:33 PM

Not similar to pulstar.

Late in 2007 Federal-Mogul filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy and reorganized.

I remember a Federal-Mogul magazine ad from the mid 1970's featuring a vision of the automotive future with Syd Mead artwork (or maybe it was Bendix brake pads). I cannot seem to find it on line, but will post it if I do.

Fancy spark plugs do not work well in vintage automobiles, at least not in my air-cooled 1977 Porsche 911.

It will be interesting to see which segment of the market picks up on this new technology.

those plugs make me think of this.

OKADAPROJECTS | PRODUCTS | PLASMA DIRECT

no direct % for economy but it does state reduced fuel consumption.

I just cant see 7xx$ for coils. wonder what would happen if you combined these coils and those plugs? near 0% wasted fuel in combustion?

btw does anyone know what is required to become carb approved? as the coils are?

what about these plugs? http://www.powerstarsparkplugs.net/

That site is not very big on providing graphics.

Less glam, more slam?

They do look similar, but these have larger stars at the end.
