Finally achieved my Goal, 100% over EPA :)

With this last fill, I finally achieved the goal I've had for the last two and half years...a 50mpg 90 day average of commuting. This isn't a one fill high mpg number (like some on the top ten list), this is a real commute into and out of Philly each day. No pure highway tanks or short fills to bump up the number either :) I'm very excited about the recent results, but don't think I can push it much higher than where it is now without some more serious mods.

It's also an automatic transmission, so EOC or P&G :D

BHarvey 07-07-2011 04:21 PM

Great job!

endurance 07-07-2011 04:47 PM

Wow! Strong work. 2x the EPA rating and with an automatic tranny. That's impressive.

Daox 07-07-2011 05:17 PM

Agreed, 100% above EPA with a slushbox is quite the task! Congrats.

I think the term Master Ecomodder is appropriate, especially with the route you must take.

regards
Mech

I *really* respect your accomplishment because I also judge myself on the 90 day scale.

Is there one thing that put you "over the top", so to speak?

Tygen1 07-07-2011 06:07 PM

Warm weather put me over the top :) I've had the current mods since winter time. But in the winter I put on some light weight wheels, RE-92 Tires, Zero Alignment, and Deleted the P/S and A/C, so that is what has brought me from one 50mpg Commute to several.
Of note is that my most recent tank is better than my best pure highway tank :)

nemo 07-07-2011 06:44 PM

Congratulations. Way to go.

guudasitgets 07-07-2011 09:13 PM

geez I got a long way to go

guudasitgets 07-07-2011 09:20 PM

lets see 100% - 39.4% = ah heck I don't even want to know, thats great for you though, I'm workin on it

Hey hey hey now. mine is over a 90 day too, with A/C and P/S still belted. :p but I got the 5 speed. but I still say great job.:thumbup::thumbup: with the slushbox.

and I am with you some on the TOP 10 EPA list only have 1 or 2 entries on the fuel log. and think they should not count.

Congrats, Tygen1!! I have the same next goal and it just happens to be the same number:thumbup:

Looking back, I would not say "One" thing put it over the top...except what was mentioned earlier that pushed me over the 50mpg threshold. I've worked hard at taking out as many stop signs and lights from my commute and spending a greater percentage of it on the highway and I have modded the car to get the best possible highway mpg's, because I'm at a large disadvantage in city driving with an ATX. The ATX ZX2 is geared higher than the MTX, so it can do better on the highway, and I keep my speed down to the 50-55mph range. Aeromods are key on the highway and I have modified my car to run a lean 17:1 AFR on the highway, that's the only way to get this sort of mpg out of this car. The LRR tires, deletes, and Zero Toe have greatly helped in runing leaner than I could before. I used to run down the road at a 52-53 LOD getting instant mpg readings around the mid 60's. Now I run down the road at a 46-48 LOD seeing mid 70's on the instant reading. RE-92's are an amazing tire and I would highly recomend them to any serious Ecomodder.
So to sum it up: Route Planning, Low Speed, Aeromods, Lean, and LRR are the heavy hitters on my mod list, but the sum of all the little things help as well.
Keep in mind that it has taken two and half years to make this happen :)

I'm glad to learn that I am not the only one obsessing over the Top Ten lists :D
I gotta knock you off the list in order to make it....unless they do a Top Ten instead of the Top Nine right now :) I don't think I can make more than 105%, it's taken some really unusually good traffic to get it this good. I don't expect the traffic to stay this good all summer. However the last three tanks are 112%....so you never know ;)

Oh yea, I almost forgot to explain that the P/S was leaking and I was just tired of the mess and trying to fix it. The A/C hadn't worked for years and I don't really need it anymore and with the car having 292K on it, not having A/C doesn't really effect the value, cause the value is almost nothing :) Who would want to buy a car with wheel skirts anyhow?

deathtrain 07-07-2011 11:43 PM

obsessing is not the word for it.:D I still have not done any aero mods just been to hot after work. I still have to do the grill block, wheel covers/ skirts, and mirror delete (once i find a good replacement for inside ones.)

Still on the fence on the PS delete. looks easy but i do drive down town some times. A/C delete I dont think I will ever do. When i have a crappy day at work and its 110 heat and 40% humidity out. I dont feel like sitting in a hot car.

I am going to try to run something like this and see if it helps. (dont hurt to try)

California98Civic 07-07-2011 11:56 PM

Wow. I'm impressed with your car too. Shocked that it's a automatic trans. What a list of mods you have.

SentraSE-R 07-08-2011 07:35 AM

Very impressive accomplishment for an AT! I agree, the top ten list needs some serious pruning/culling. I cracked the top 20, with 68 fills. Who knows how high I'd be if the mods removed the poseurs?

Maybe we should have a Peoples Choice thread, where we review and remove the poseurs, and come up with a list of peeps/cars that deserve the top ten ranking.

deathtrain 07-09-2011 09:32 PM

Here ya go I fixed it. I just removed the ones that have less then 5 fuel logs. So look you are in the top 10 now. and the highest with an auto. So go out side and run around the block for your victory lap.:turtle:

1) 2003 Cavalier: 146.76%
2) Vegan Powa!: 146.37%
3) PaleCivic: 139.742%
4) Slowest. Altima. Ever.: 118.619%
5) Shiba's Tercel : 112.8%
6) Black Knight : 106.154%
7) oldscoob : 104.609%
8) Little Blue : 100.92%
9) Chick magnet... : 95.8889%
10) Seriously? : 93.875%

even though I am tarded when it comes to math. so dont get me wrong. but when i do Average mpg / EPA MPG * 100 I get 206% (53.6/26*100=206%) i dont know i am so crappy with math i just use Excel the best i can. so what is the actual formula that is used?

cfg83 07-09-2011 10:12 PM

deathtrain -

The key is the word "above". You have to subtract the first 100 for the "% above EPA" :

Code:

20  MPG / 26 MPG = 0.77 =>  77% of EPA MPG =>  23% below EPA MPG
 26  MPG / 26 MPG = 1.00 => 100% of EPA MPG =>  0% above EPA MPG
 53.6 MPG / 26 MPG = 2.06 => 206% of EPA MPG => 106% above EPA MPG

thats what i am doing wrong.

Yeah, I always have to be careful with percentages because there is the number, and then there is the "translate it to a percentage" step that will throw me off.

At 106% above EPA, that's a good kind of wrong.

it is but with 100% over epa in an automatic tranny... that's outstanding. now that there is an active person on my heels. I will start working on my mods now.

Tygen1 07-10-2011 01:06 AM

DeathTrain, you crack me up. I never actually went in to look at who is active or not. It seems to me the Cavalier guy just came here to post some giant numbers and take the lead. It doesn't seem like he has participated. OldScoob, now there was an interesting fellow, he at least participated...but he was just a bit off.

I don't think you have to worry about me overtaking you. 50 mpg was my goal and it's going to get real costly to take it to the next leval. 50 mpg saves me quite a lot of money each month, and that is my purpose in modding. The last tank was 55mpg, I don't think I can better that. It was a very rare tank, almost no traffic issues at all in Philly, almost scary easy traffic. Not normal for sure. I should be bouncing around the 50mpg mark all summer. I'm hoping to get in at least one highway trip this year to see a buddy, but I'd have to drive past NY City and that's a traffic gamble. I'd really like to see what it would do in pure highway, because that's what my mods are focused on.

deathtrain 07-10-2011 01:19 AM

no.... I did not redo the list on who is active. If i did that i think me and you would be #1 and #2 LOL. I just re-done it for the ones who posted less than 5 in the fuel log. basically minus the posers.

I dont fault you for saving money each month. hell my purpose for buying this cars is as such:

Was driving a 97 dodge 1500 cost 60+ a week in gas to drive. the motor is over 200K (hard 200k at that) I live in Texas so that 1500 is a farm truck. that said...... truck needs new motor.

I also have an 07 charger that still has payments due.

So the thought is: buy gas sipper to park the truck then too afford new motor for pick-up. get it back to work... so i can work more to pay off charger.

JethroBodine 07-10-2011 02:35 PM

Close. You would be #2 and 3 behind PaleCivic. All the others are either beyond 90 days or don't have a full 90 days( only a couple fills). Glad to be in good company with the "list thing". If I can at least maintain my current tanks( and this one is looking to be right on the money), I should be up with you soon:thumbup:.

orange4boy 07-15-2011 05:26 AM

Nice work Tygen!

I'm right behind you. I'm now at 85% without a bunch of my aero mods.

Keep on keepin' on.

gone-kl 07-15-2011 10:07 AM

Wow, that really gives me perspective on what's possible. I have been silently hoping for at least 50% above, so I'm very impressed indeed by the 100%. And I have been in Philly traffic, I really don't know how anyone could hypermile it without biking :)

Tygen1 07-15-2011 07:01 PM

90-day Fuel Economy: 51.08 EPA Rating (% over): 25 (104.32%) :D

I'm closing in on you Death Train. Maybe next week I could catch you :)

Micman, the way I hypermile through Philly traffic is carefull route planning and then when I get out of it, I try and get crazy good mpg my highway portions.

deathtrain 07-17-2011 10:58 PM

just hit a new high. 55.74 mpg !!! Going to get the pizza pans tomorrow... if i remember.

Tygen1 07-19-2011 12:51 PM

Oh, you just had to beat my best tank by one tenth!
I just did some modifications also :)
Ducted my radiator to prevent the fan from running so much and cleaned my MAF and TB! Although my car is due to be inspected thsi week.... so I got run non-lean for a day so they don't read some crazy codes from the OBDII :D That will put a hurt on my average :(

I gotta break onto the "list" sometime this summer!

Don't tempt me to mod this car more!!111!!!

Tygen1 07-22-2011 05:12 PM

90-day Fuel Economy: 51.48 EPA Rating (% over): 25 (105.92%)

I believe this puts me in the top 10 :D

I'm snapping at your heals Deathtrain!

deathtrain 07-22-2011 07:11 PM

I just filled up 58.36mpg that puts me at 107.7%

Tygen1 07-22-2011 09:38 PM

Oh you raskaly rabbit!

I was hoping to squeeze in a fill just before you, but came up a couple tenth shy of beating you for just a couple hours ;)

JethroBodine 07-22-2011 10:21 PM

Congrats to BOTH of you. You just kicked another "retired" car out of the top 10:thumbup:.

deathtrain 07-22-2011 11:56 PM

just fyi I fill up after work every Friday, at the same gas station, about 5:30-5:40, and buy a 12 pack of beer and a pack of smokes. its so bad the guy behind the counter ask me what my MPG is this week. only reason i got this tank so high is because i started EOC a little. I didn't do it on Monday and Tuesday morning. then this afternoon I had a crappy day at work and ran the crap out of the A/C on the way home.

Thanks Jethro. It's good to have friendly competition, keeps things fun and challenging. I got car work to do this weekend (other cars not this one) I might be able to tape up my hub caps with some foil tape for some faux smoothies and tape up my upper grill. just depends on time and the beer cycle.

My goal is 60mpg.... and I will make it.

Tygen1 07-23-2011 03:27 PM

Thanks Jethro, you will be there in no time!

I also like friendly competition. It drives us to do more with less. You being able to EOC is a big advantage.

The State is just now starting work on a major bridge, the main one I and a couple million others take each day. This is going to put a hurting on my mpg. It's going to take three years to re-deck it with at least one lane close the entire time :( I'll do my best to manage it but I may need some more mods to offset this...

JethroBodine 07-23-2011 06:11 PM

If I can keep myself from filling up until Wed., my 90 day should be around 90% over SWAG(Scientific Wild A$$ Guess). I'm getting there.

Good luck with that con/destruction.

deathtrain 07-24-2011 01:46 AM

well I looked and no skirts for me, the body shape just isn't there on the car. So it looks like i am going to just have to fill the tire gap in the wheel well and run some smoothies. I also was able to get a good look under the car and looks good for the belly pan. I have two frame rails the are about 8-10 inches away from the exhaust on both sides. So i will 1) attach something that spans the bridge then belly pan the whole thing. 2) just go from the frame rail to the out side of the body.

Now the grill block is a different story. The upper is not a problem I am Just going to duct tape it up and be done with it. The lower is different. the lower grill block is where 70% of my cooling venting is at on the car.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...322_175559.jpg

So I had some pipe wrap from this winter that I will attach to the bottom. then we will see how the temps do. you cant see in the picture but there is a piece of plastic that goes through the middle of the lower and then i has support plastic every 4 inches.

**EDIT** upper grill is now taped up and moon disc are on the way.

Tygen1 07-25-2011 09:43 AM

Check my Ducted Radiator thread. I'm ducting only about 1/3 of my radiator, plus a tranny cooler with a half licence plate sized hole, and in the 107 degree temps it kept it all under 220, which is ideal for me because it keeps the fan off.
Ducting can create some perssure, were as just having an open hole that can vent to the ground or up and around the radiator is not as effective.
