I believe 'gasser' referred to a car that could have any modifications but had to run on pump gas.

They had a front V-8 with a straight axle, and they didn't tub wheelwells back then so the big tires stuck out of the wheel arch.

I always thought gasser was short for pro gasoline class as opposed to fuelie.
