Flow Illustrator car templates!

If you don't have Flow Illustrator download it here. PC only at this point. Be sure to set Incoming Velocity to 120 and Viscosity to 45.

Let's start here.

*I have made every effort to make these accurate, including the underbody. Though I have traced them over blueprints, they will not be exact.

1988-1994
Suzuki Cultus/Swift
Geo Metro 3dr hatchback

1988-1991
Honda CRX

1969-1978
Nissan Fairlady S30
Datsun 240Z/260Z/280Z

1964-1966
Ford F100 styleside shortbed

1988-1992
Ford Probe, modified with grille blocks, air dam and partial belly pans
http://i43.tinypic.com/15f3sj6.jpg

TO USE THESE:
Save them to your computer. Open that file in a program like MS Paint (it will be a JPEG-unusable in Flow Illustrator). Make your modifications. Save as 24 bit Bitmap (BMP).

If you'd like a side view of your car, let me know the year, make and model, number of doors etc. and I can whip it up for you.

.

.

For help with the shape of kammbacks and boattails, scale this aero template so the ground is at the ground plane and the top of the template is at the highest point of your car.

I downloaded it, have to read how to use it, might never use it at the rate I adapt to new things though.

Can you do the 94 Toyota Carrola sedan? I just need a picture with the aero templet overlayed. I just cant figure out how to do it.

New thread - good idea.

I'm looking forward to downloading the standalone version soon. For now I'm on dialup low-band so that's have to wait. But, once I get a round tuit I'd love to run Phil's template and a cylinder as baseline geometries for reference. In the real world first simulations validate the modeling tools; then experiment with different geometries. Anyone else game for this? (wink)

It's super easy.

Hit enter, 0, enter. Type in the full location of the file, for instance, c:\users\john\desktop\carpicture.bmp. Make sure to use backslashes.

(If you open the folder in Explorer/My Computer you can see the file location at the top)

Press enter. Set the top (or left) slider to 120, and the other to 45.

Done!

To exit or open a different file, close out of the window you typed in.

You can use a free program called GIMP to overlay things, but it takes a little getting used to. I have Photoshop though so that works even better. ;)

Oof, I feel sorry for you using dialup! :(

Feel free to run whatever you want and report back with results!

By the way if anyone wants to make their own, I get most of my blueprints from The-Blueprints.com - The largest free blueprint collection on the Internet but also get a few from Flickr when people scan in old spec sheets. Blueprints for things like the F100 are hard to find.

jime57 12-10-2011 07:51 AM

Any chance you could do the 2000-2006 Honda Insight? It is similar to the CRX but smoother. You can find an outline drawing at this location:

InsightCentral.net - Encyclopedia - Honda Insight Scale Drawings

I'd love to give it a try!

ChazInMT 12-10-2011 12:41 PM

How's This Jim? Insight Silhouette. 600 x 300, Flow Illustrator ready.

Saab had some really cool stuff back in the day. You might recognize the 96 as my avatar. This is an early model with the "bullnose". Same goes with the wagon version, the 95.

I do suggest trying these out in the Flow Illustrator because it's interesting to see the aerodynamic differences between bodystyles.

Saab 96-this basic bodystyle used on 92, 93 and 96 with differing windows.

The 99 Coupe was actually designed with Kamm's principles, though ironically the Combi does better in the flow illustrator.

very cool sven! there's even an option to buy autocad blueprints. i'm cheap, so i printscreened the blueprint, and hopefully img2cad will turn it into a dxf. it hasn't worked with normal images so far.

Sven7 03-14-2012 10:08 PM

Oop, sorry I haven't checked the thread in awhile. PM's are easier :)

I talked to 300zxrb26dett via PM and can't find a blueprint of that generation of American Escort.

Here is the F250 made off a blueprint.

There aren't any Raptor blueprints so I used the side view. It's not perfect but it'll do :)

Don't mean to be a bother but how about a 1995 Mustang gt with and without a spoiler and a 2006 gt maybe?

Yep

(Road and Track has great blueprints!)

Any chance we can get a PT cruiser?

WD40 03-18-2012 02:22 PM

I didn't see one for the EG 1992-1995 hatchback .. any chance .. thanks in advance

pmiulian 03-20-2012 09:25 AM

Ok, so I`ve been playing arround a bit with FI - I did all kinds of tests - variations based on the shape of my car.
Ignoring the fact that FI gives just a basic idea that is very far from the truth, how can we use FI to get a real advantage ?
One way that seems to work for me, is profiling different parts of the car separately. Like the trunk of the car or the windshiled slope.
But still this doesn`t help that much.
How can we interpret or simulate as close as possible to reality ?
What are the parameters that best describe air flow and why ?
What size should the template be ? I`m guessing that the bigger, the better.

Is there any point to doing a top down flow?

Sven7 03-26-2012 05:28 AM

I'll try to do those requested sometime this week.

Just a tip for you guys making your own. For it to properly work you need to

omit wheels- imagine the car sliced down the center.
include the ground plane- the car needs to be in ground effect.
give it plenty of room above and behind the car for the flow to work.

Enemy:
You mean top down with a Jeep? The flow will look approximately like this

:D

pjbgravely 03-26-2012 05:00 PM

Just what I was looking for but nothing for my Mustang on that site. I might have to take a picture. If anyone has one for a 99-04 Mustang AKA sn95 new edge I will see if I can get a windows box running.

Lol, viewing from the top, ie airflow arround the sides.

Jeep top on or off doesn't matter it always looks like that.:p

*Now updated with a Honda Civic EF (per request), in the Civic post. Have fun guise!

Also a couple more because racecar

GM EV-1 electric car- I believe this is the most aerodynamic production car ever made, right? Only a few left in existence. This should show some of the Flow Illustrator's shortcomings, as the EV-1 has lots of plan taper helping the air around.

The Toyota Ra Ra street-legal solar car probably has the distinction as the 'production' car of lowest drag factor.(yeah, that's pretty anal!)
