Sun, Sand, Sea and MPG....

OK I apologise for the "carp" title but this is a bit of fun, I hope.

Next week I escape to the Med for some sun on an annual holiday. We are off to Spain for a week in a friend's villa in the sun.

Its a surprise for our son as we are also taking his friend, his friend's mum and my dad on the one trip. So we have had to kind of scale up for the hire car / actually a van or bus. We have a Citroen Jumpy as our all in one bus booked for the week.

So roll up, roll up my fellow EM-ers. Assuming I'm going to do my best ED'ing on it, and I will be driving on the wrong side of the road - Us and Japan are correct... - what do you think my average MPG will be ?

I will accept any measure but the answer will be in Kilometres and Litres as that is what I will have available - I'll do a US MPG and IMP MPG equivalent.

The hire deal is you get the car fueled and it will be returned fueled, but as we know this means the needle will be on F so to make it fair I will top off to EM standard just after pick up and just before dropping off.

As a taster I expect driving will be 20% motorway and the rest split between highways (100 km max) and country roads (60-80 km max). But I can't be sure as every time we go to this part of Spain the roads have changed with loads and loads of construction going on. The recession may have slowed that though.

I've done this twice before in an old Partner bus (40 MPG) and a Vauxhall Zafira (42.3 mpg) - both Diesels and this one is a Diesel (130cv apparently) too.

Place your bets...

Any questions please ask. We leave at 0'Dark00 on Tuesday.

I had to look up the Citroen Jumpy because I've never even heard of it. How large is it compared to a Ford Transit or a Focus iMax / Mazda5?

I bet you'll beat your score in the Zafira by a good margin, since you're probably a better ecodriver now than before.

If you find yourself in Barcelona by any chance, then could you look for some cheap hostels for 5-6 people in mid September? Just joking

To help with the guessing, I'll post the reported (from a users' forum) numbers (Highway/City/Average) for the 2007-2010 Jumpy II:
.Reported (l/100km)
1.6HDi 90HP5.6/7.3/6.3
2.0HDi 120HP6.9/8.7/7.7
2.0HDi 138HP7.6/8.6/8.0

6.3 l/100km (37.5MPG) that's quite amazing for a 9 seater (or 7 cu meters -250 cubic feet), 1180 kg load capacity + it's own 2700kg~6000lbs, and it stands 2 meters high ~6'4" this thing gets better mileage than the Prius relative to it's weight

Faulty logic there. The US and Europe drive on the right side of the road. Right is the opposite of wrong. Roads have only two sides. Therefore, since Britain and Japan do not drive on the right side, they must drive on the wrong side. QED :-)

According to the confirmation email (In spanish) we have the "120cv" version, if that helps.

Unfortunately I won't have internet access whilst away so I won't be able to do updates.

As is usual with these things the last few days of work are proving to be horrid...

Well, your mileage should increase dramatically when you start driving on the right side of the road, drafting is much more efficient than swerving around oncoming traffic. Lol

I would bet, but I have zero clue as to what van you have (sorry, chicken tax + EPA + low fuel prices keep them on your side of the pond) but I wish I did.
Have fun!!

Those are just figures based on reports from 3-5 users. I couldn't find the official figures. But yes, a hypermiler would have fun trying to get fc like that from a rolling barn.
