Fuel log: graph v 1.1 is online

http://forum.ecomodder.com/fe-graphs/graph11.gif

This is the Blackfly's fuel log graph.

It's v 1.0.

You will see your vehicle's graph the next time you add or edit a fill entry. (IE if you want to see it now, just go "edit/submit" on one of your entries.)

There's much more that needs to be added to it, but I just want to get this out there for now. Perfect is the enemy of good! Especially when it comes to getting things launched.

At a minimum, eventually the graph will also show:

1 - cumulative ("lifetime") mpg as a line
2 - EPA combined rating (line)
3 - temperature (probably line also)

The bar width & spacing is dynamic. The more entries you have in your log, the thinner they get, and if they get too thin for the smallest font size, the MPG label disappears as well.

OK, everybody: now inundate me with additional features you'd like to see on this!

How about a date on each tank

Silveredwings 02-11-2008 09:55 PM

sweet

brucepick 02-11-2008 10:02 PM

Very nice.
And yes, please do add dates.

I realize that the spacing of the entries can make it difficult to show dates. Maybe one date per every 4 or 6 vertical bars? My tanks are so close together; showing a date more often than that would be impossible.

Darin - That graph of my gas log that I showed you had dynamic X-axis labeling....it showed each month as intervals on the gas log. That might be worth showing as it can stay clean and still give a good indication of tank fillups since some of us only fill up once a month.

mattW 02-11-2008 10:44 PM

Being able to enter values in L and Km would be good if its not already possible, it sucks having to convert them to US values... (If it is I will do my fuel log here)

igo 02-11-2008 10:47 PM

I like a clean look of the graph. I would like to see some dates along the horizontal axis. I don't like the temperature line idea if it clutters things up too much.

I dont what the graph looking like cleanmpg's graphs (way too much going on).

Holy wtf.

Agreed. Ultimately, I'd like to have the user choose the units, but that's probably a ways off.

I think for cases such as yours, I'm going to create 2 graphs. One with the lifetime mpg, and a second with a maximum of "N" bars, with spacing that permits a mpg & date label per bar.

MetroMPG 02-12-2008 08:11 AM

TomO: the CMPG X axis spacing is date driven. I don't want to take that route, but I will add dates.

brucepick 02-12-2008 11:06 AM

CMPG graph above shows data points from four calendar years, starting in '05. Somehow '06 got broken up into two lines, one yellow and one blue.

Anyway, two graphs, one for long term and one for recent, seems sensible.

Thanks for all your work!

MetroMPG 02-12-2008 01:22 PM

Dates added. See post 1. Note - you won't see your corrected graph until you either add another tank or edit/update an existing entry.

MetroMPG 02-12-2008 01:23 PM

I also added a link from the fuel economy info beneath your avatar directly to your fuel log.

Yeah, I know. I intensionally picked that car because it looked the most confusing.

MetroMPG 02-17-2008 06:44 PM

Did a bit more work on the chart today:
  • added better titles up top,
  • plotted EPA combined value (if entered)
  • plotted "lifetime" (cumulative) MPG
To see the changes in your graph, edit & submit an entry, then RELOAD the page to clear your cache and fetch the updated image.

TomO 02-18-2008 11:23 AM

^^^ noice! I like 'em.

MetroMPG 02-18-2008 11:27 AM

I'm still planning to incorporate the temperature feature as well. Also possibly a line showing the "hypermiler" threshold (20% over EPA combined) - but that depends on how busy the graph gets. Don't want to overdo it.

I will be switching gears when those items are finished and working on some other tasks, then returning to the log to set up the "Long term" & "short term" versions for people like brucepick who have tons of data and whose long term graphs are too packed for labels & pretty spacing.

NoCO2 02-18-2008 11:38 AM

I love it, really helps me see what I'm doing!

s2man 02-18-2008 04:20 PM

Nice job, Darin. Thanks for all the work.

I like that lifetime-mpg line on Blackfly's chart. A nice, straight, steady climb. Will it ever plateau? :)

Peakster 02-18-2008 04:47 PM

Looking fantastic!

Who 02-24-2008 02:46 PM

When there are multiple tanks in a day, is there any chance of having them display in order of fillup?

I'd love if I could just add the date, the cumulative miles or kms at my choice and then fill in the amount of fuel in gallons or litres. Then it does the Δ for the trip mileage, and does any LHK/MPG calcs.

Just having miles and gallons seems a bit myopic.

MetroMPG 02-26-2008 08:38 PM

I can make the tanks show so the order they're entered is how they're sorted if they have the same date. Can you point me to 2 in your log that are currently backwards?

Miles & gallons isn't myopia, it's laziness. I've had several requests for L/100km. It will be added at some point. Just catering to the largest audience first :)

Who 02-26-2008 09:12 PM

350 million out of 6 billion is large? ;-)

Anyway that we can flag the order on a given date? Just kind of messes you up when you compare your log files, but not worth having someone change to keep things straight... just wondering if it is a quick input script and database change?

Dec 22 is backwards. Jan 4 might have order issues bit it's not worth your effort - I wasn't driving for mileage coming home.

Thanks!!! And as the others have said, it does look great!

MetroMPG 02-26-2008 09:31 PM

Who - try it now. It's sorting by date DESC, fillid DESC. Is that what you're after?

brucepick 02-27-2008 10:39 PM

Excellent!

I'm a veteran of a total of three sites with fuel logs by now - and this is the first that's dealt with multiple fills for a single date.

Thank you! - from a guy who easily drives 100+ mi/day and occasionally will top off twice in a day.

SVOboy 02-27-2008 11:42 PM

We're always here to take your suggestions to make the fuel log more useful, :)
