Fuelly aggregate data on a selection of bikes
 

With a nice email I was able to get a dump of data from the nice folks at Fuelly. I removed obvious entry errors and averaged each bike. For your reading and riding pleasure, the MPG (US) averages:

Far from a complete list, the WR was a bit of a suprise. Maybe worth considering over the CBR.

Without knowing the amount of people riding each bike and leading to that average, it is not really useful.
Statistics are worthwhile only with a massive population.

Fuelly has enough entries that I think it is approaching having a significant level of validity for many models.

It would be nice to be able to somehow have the average for a particular model available on Fuelly, but as they state it would then lend itsself to owners of a particular model gaming the system. And who's gonna check the figures? In scrubbing the data I found one entry at like 6033mpg. Several others under 15mpg, which I don't think is even possible.

Wayne at cleanmpg took the WR250X with a gear swap and crossed the country at 100+ mpg. Looks like a nice efficient bike.

Yeah, that's why I threw it in the request. I had no idea others were getting such good mileage as well.

It was a bit of a suprise to see the 80mpg average for me because I'd guess most riders of these tend to roost and enjoy the handling and power. All this and 80mpg? This demands a second look!

Last night CL had one with 300 miles, no damage for $4500 asking, and two others for $5000. Hmmm. A little gearing, seat mods and a small windshield and this would be a truly awesome commuter! Stop off at the go-cart track for some hot laps on the way home!

...is there a way to get a model average (and total fuel ups) on Fuelly? I was curious about the F650CS, but I surely won't take all the entries and weighted average them...

The WR250 has the most uncomfortable seat for sitting on I have ever come accross. When riding in the bush the rider does a lot of standing on the pegs and the seat as a place to sit is not that important, but when riding 15 minutes to town on the highway my butt goes numb as well as other parts of the anatomy... So that if you plan to do a long commutt on this bike a replacement seat may be even higher on the priority list than re gearing the final drive.
Without streamlining I don't think the WR250 is all that good on the highway at speeds over 65 mph, it may be under powered in headwinds and hills. A better choise without streamlining, would be the WR400 which would also be much improved with streamlining.
My plan for my own WR250 is a semi recumbent streamliner much like the Gator by Dan Gurney.

The "efficiency" of a model is probably biased when the owner registers on Fuelly thought ...

What about number of speeds in each gearbox, can we drag some data from this discrimination ?
Same with rated HP, HP per liter, compression ratio and weight ?

Renault megane dci, Fuelly doesn't have that kind of resolution of data. It's just basic information people enter. Inaccuracies and all. You would have to take the Fuelly data and enter those specifications for each model and do the comparo.

Redyaris, I was hoping you'd chime in! Yes, definitely a recut and gel insert for my boney butt. Does yours have knobbies or the street tires? I understand the supermoto style is much better on the freeway and the R model.

Feet forward? You betcha! That is a key component of a >100 mpg freeway bike I believe.

I've been studying the Alligator very closely the last few months. The perimeter frame of the WRs will probably cause some leg clearance issues near the riders crotch. The Alligator has a very thin mid section in this area to keep the legs from splaying out into the wind. The best donor bike frame I've looked at in this regard is a Rebel 250. It has a spine that goes all the way down to the swingarm pivot.

Of course cutting and welding is always an option for any bike.


Alvaro84, emailing Fuelly is the step I took. Specify how you are going to use the data and what field information you are looking for and for what model(s). They provided a file that can be opened in Excel and you can average, mean, mode from there. I feel they are being very generous doing this so express thanks and by all means provide the source for your data.
