Fun turbo project
This past week I helped a buddy turbo his 79 vw Rabbit. Start to finish in 5 days and should get thrown on the dyno in a few weeks. The car was free and the kit cost came to about $100, thats a super duper homie hookup.
Full custom everything, fully tig welded stainless steel and aluminum YouTube - Sweet Turbo Rabbit fun fun :turtle: |
at first, I thought that cell phone remotely started the engine... :D
|
OK, forgive me for not being able to tell, but is it a gas or diesel?
Completely unrelated: I had a couple of '79s myself :) |
Its a gas 1.6 lol.
right now it only has the 1st half of the exhaust on but we went quite a bit overboard with the full 3" turbo back:rolleyes:. That size exhaust should support up to about 700 hp Sure sounds like a diesel though haha |

I thought exactly the same thing about the remote start.
And yes, to me it sounds like a giant Cummins diesel turbo spooling up and down. Wow. |
Here are a few more pix

The material is sch 40 stainless steel 304, its like 3-4mm thick. I dont call myself a welder btw, I'm only starting to get semi-good with my Tig. http://a565.ac-images.myspacecdn.com...04e0c6a1dc.jpg http://a254.ac-images.myspacecdn.com...620918f7d5.jpg And this pic is funny because thats a 100+k Full Raced out Subaru Sti in the background. http://a897.ac-images.myspacecdn.com...f5d611ffd0.jpg I feel cool in the plasma goggles  The outlet on the turbine was about 2 inches but everyone knows bigger is better post turbo. I knew I should have coned it out to 4 inches:D |
Turbo actually looks pretty small but I guess you dont need too much for 1.6 liters heh. How much boost you gonna be running? I bet that lil vw feels a lot better now!
|
lol, I think its the smallest frame turbo Garrett makes. My buddy only wanted to make about 150-175hp and the Saab the turbo came off made 175hp factory so we should be right in the turbo's sweet spot.
I dont know how much boost yet, the dyno will tell me what the engine wants. We plans to add on a water/meth kit in the future to combat high IAT's. i will be sure to post up any results/dyno plots/burnout vids :) |
$100 is the cost of a few couplers and flanges.
Cost for me to replicate this kit for a non friend would be around $3000 The funny thing is that this little Rabbit is so sleeper. We are confident we can squeeze @ least a 13 second quarter time and still get around 30 mpg. |
I have a mitsubishi TD05H from a first gen talon if you would be interested...just pm me.
|
I'd say small is best for a 1.6 gasser shooting for 175 hp. You want that thing to spool fast. This turbo can probably deliver full boost from around 2000 rpm if needed. That thing is gonna be fun to drive on the street.
I have pushed 24 psi at the outlet of my kkk03 in my TDI. I don't know the A/R from the top of my head, but it's probably a tad smaller than this turbo (it's a GT15 right? But Garrett makes the GT12 too). Granted it was only up to 3500 rpm, but I've run 20 psi up to 5000 rpm. I don't do that anymore though, right foot keeps it below 10 psi. |

That's pretty cool stuff you get to work on all day.
I helped the fabricator build my last race header... a pro makes it look so easy but we had to fit it to my car and my particular engine and around the carbs and distributor. I supplied all the 304 tubing and solar flux (from SPD), 4-1 collector with tunable venturis and megaphone (Burns Stainless), and made my own flanges. It still cost $400 labor, and I felt like I got a deal. Nice looking welds BTW, you can call yourself a welder anytime. |
thanks
And thats a great looking setup you have there. What does it power? And the manifold looks really good, pretty close to EL, good for NA. Any more pix, times? Making a header/manifold on a Vw/suby style engine is not fun. Compared to an inline 4 they are the devil, haha. It does sound like you got quite a good deal:thumbup: One of my next projects is to build a twinscroll T3 manifold for a buddy of mine to go in his 10 sec bug. He is looking to turn out about 300hp and its a fully built 2276. I even have a fully built 2 liter in my bus right now. It decided to eat a air cleaner stud nut @ 5,000 rpm on the freeway and I think it now has a hole in the piston but I haven't had the heart to take it apart yet :( If the engine can be salvaged with minimal $$$ it will become my dune buggy's motor-vation. That whole incident kinda turned me off to aircooled so that why this winter a turbo honda engine and tranny will find its way into the bus. :turtle: everyone loves pix http://a152.ac-images.myspacecdn.com...a2eb1cf917.jpg |
