Geo Metro Fuel Filler Neck Refab

The fuel filler neck on the geo goes down the back of the fender, and is covered by a piece of plastic. Once dirt and water get up here, it's rust heaven.

My filler neck rusted 2 holes through it.

This is a Dealer only item at $366!!!!!!!! Me and the guy at the parts counter just laughed.

So on to Napa for some Fuel Filler line, and on to Home Depot for some Galvenized pipe fittings.

I needed to keep the vent, luckily, that was the only part still in good shape, so I cut about an inch below the vent, giving me room to attach a new line.

Fuel filler hose is not flexible. Radiator hose can not be used for fuel, it will eat it.

It's a little over an inch from the tire, just far enough not to rub. When I have a little more time I can make some adjustments and get it tucked in a bit farther.

Total price, about $20

Had to take it out to made an adjustment to get it further away from the tire, so took a picture:

It's all about functionality...nothing else matters.

That saved you over $300.00 and looks like it would be very safe. Better than dripping gas all over the place!

Excellent work. I don't mean to be a conspiracy nut but it really is weird that there seems to be a few random "dealer only" parts that fail easily. It's almost as if they already knew ahead of time those parts would fail...

Safety matters too. We will see if it stays leak free.

PVC version of your mod? Hmmm...

Just had a thought...would PVC be an acceptable material, or does gas effect it? It seems a better solution if it can withstand constant contact with fuel...

Hacksaw.

I know of people that have rigged fuel cells with a PVC filler. I think the ideal would be to find a buddy that can bend some exhaust tubing up for you, you could make a leak free (provided you can weld/braze well enough), stock type piece that way.

True. True...
However, if I did have a buddy that bent exhaust, I'd have cat-free systems on both Metros right now...lol
Mimicking the OEM part would be ideal, but solving a problem quickly, and on the cheap, often prevails!

It probably wouldn't cost that much to bend a piece up even if it wasn't a buddy deal. Just have to make sure it's someone who knows just what the hell they're doing. My dad's truck is proof that most of the franchise shops don't. 2 bends! The kid couldn't get 2! Bends right after having it explained to him twice, and being given a drawing of just wtf he was supposed to make. Finding something with a rubber filler neck that was long enough at the junk yard might be another option.
