As Gas Prices Drop, America Resumes Big Car Love Affair - DailyFinance

Might as well park that micro junk- gas is CHEAP!

jcp123 11-13-2014 12:21 AM

I never really lost my love affair with big cars. But I have gained an appreciation for how good small cars can be.

Xist 11-13-2014 12:59 AM

We are still very far from two dollars a gallon and when we hit that the first time, I bought a bike. I doubt that I will ever consider gas to be cheap again.

cowmeat 11-13-2014 05:46 AM

I had a 71 LTD with a 351 Cleveland back in the day, and LOVED it.

Of course, I couldn't afford gas for it, so by the end of the week I would be walking to work. I lived in Illinois at the time, and five miles is a looooooong walk in the winter time!

Never again!

LeanBurn 11-13-2014 11:41 AM

I'll keep the same cars....might go faster than 90km/hr (55mph) on occasion though.

...Talk about living it up!

spacemanspif 11-13-2014 12:28 PM

Now is the time to stock up on eco cars and sell for inflated price when gas goes back up

jamesqf 11-13-2014 12:49 PM

One of the things I wonder about in idle moments: just WHAT are all these people compensating for, anyway? Smaller cars (and trucks) are more convenient, more fun, often more comfortable - and IMHO anyway, it's nice to have a few extra thousand in the stash.

user removed 11-13-2014 01:34 PM

So true to both the above posts.

I like bigger cars if they have a substantial feel, or in other words, if they have a bit of that bank-vault feel. Camrys and Crown Vics/Grand Marquis/Town Cars score highly on that measure.

Ecky 11-13-2014 04:17 PM

I've been seeing more Insights popping up on Craigslist lately for very reasonable prices.

People have short memories and even shorter perspectives.

Nope.

Spacemanspif - you nailed it ! Now would be a great time to buy economy cars.

niky 11-13-2014 07:16 PM

A sign of prosperity... a cow, some sheep, and a little wife with hips big enough to pass a brood of twenty. We are fundamentally programmed to look for birthing hips in a woman. In the absence of that, a big derriere is a good substitute.

It's nice that people no longer have unrealistic body issues stemming from impossibly skinny supermodels.

Instead, they've been replaced by an entirely different set of body issues stemming from impossibly curvy celebrities.

Hat tip: Don't google "Kim Kardashian" "Paper Magazine"... the levels of photoshop will leave your eyes scarred for life.

From the unquestionable Cracked.com:

[R]esearch suggests that under economic duress, men prefer drooling over taller, older and more realistically proportioned Playmates. Indeed, Playmates of the Year during crappy fiscal years have been consistently older and heavier, with larger waists and waist-to-hip ratios than their good-economy counterparts.

I cannot imagine that Kim's picture is any better, I have only seen Reddit-edited versions, and editing a .jpeg never improves quality, with the best skill set.

Cobb 11-13-2014 08:55 PM

Nah, I like big legs and thighs myself.

Having owned a tacoma and driven an impala big vehicles get more respect on the road. I could go anywhere I wanted on or off road with the truck. With an eco vehicle people will cut you off if you signal or even look left or right.

Many people though the impala was a police car and I had 2 guys pull over when I took off behind them.

To me those don't count as "big" cars. A Tacoma is a small truck, and very useful one, compared to it's competitors. And the Impala, while big-er, is still a V6 powered car that returns acceptable mileage for it's size and comfort level.

When we talk about people compensating, we are talking about people who own F-350 King Ranch gigantic trucks and have never used the truck for anything other than driving to work and getting a cup of coffee. Same goes for the people who but the SRT8 Charger or SS Impala who have no plans of racing anything, ever. But these people buy these cars because they have something to prove and that is usually "Mine is better than your's because I paid more; my wallet makes me more important".

I have no idea why people buy the really big trucks unless the actually need them for work/hobbies. I've driven too many F-350/Silvy 3500 for work and I can't speak for the "small" ones but the 8' bed, 4 full-door models are HUGE and suck to park. I just drive to the back and park in 2 spots. If I tried parking between 2 cars, my doors would hit their car and half the bed would hang out of the spot...and that is only IF I have a lane that's 40' wide that allows me to swing the beast enough to get in cleanly. I'll take a small car that can be whipped around over a tank any day...

Cobb 11-13-2014 09:57 PM

Oh, you mean people who buy hummers, excursions, f500 f650 trucks and charger hell cats?

I thought the article was saying vehicles were getting larger, like how todays toyota trucks are big in relation to the toyota trucks of the 80s.

Who exactly are you including in that 'we'? Not me, that's for sure.

jcp123 11-13-2014 11:34 PM

The big booty thing is kind of puzzling to me too. I have always thought this struggle to be so skinny was disturbing, I have always liked a naturally thick female. But why focus on butts? Or hips? It's all in the proportionality.

Xist 11-13-2014 11:56 PM

I think that I have read too many comic books. I like women with good hourglass figures and shapely legs. While not all women with pleasant curves also have unpleasant ones, well, I once mentioned my 5'0" 250-pound friend that my [then-]girlfriend wanted a butt, and my friend laughed and said "Just tell her to eat and she will grow a butt!"

You know, I still plan on carrying my bride across the threshold, and throwing out my back in the process is out of the question.

Women on dating sites describe themselves as "curvy" or "curvaceous," but I am not interested when their curves resemble the Michelin Man.

Never can figure out why I am single... :)

norfolk cars & trucks - by owner - craigslist

Go to photo gallery and just look for any reasonably economical cars. I'm not trying to argue any point. In eastern va it seems that sellers are trying to get rid of the gas hogs.

There was a 1994 Corolla with 227k miles (a little less than 400k kilometers) and the seller thinks it's worth $1995. It's getting booring looking at some of the "dreamer" ads about cars with major mechanical issues that sellers think are still worth over $1000.

Hey buddy your car is junk, sell it to u-wrench-it.

I like women that take care of themselves. To me it shows that they care about themselves. How could they care about someone else if they have no self respect?

My wife could pass for Annette Funicello's sister.

Good for both. It'll help her get a butt, and help you carry her without throwing out your back.

Xist 11-14-2014 11:29 AM

Heh. I just kept scrolling. I am here to look at cars, not women, dag-nab it! :D

PaleMelanesian, I have been talking to a 6'1" young woman for a few months. We went to dinner twice and I enjoyed chatting with her so much even before we met that I started procrastinating responding to other women. She originally asked me to work out with her and I offered to paint her house, but she started going to the gym on her own and hired a painter. I have offered to help a few other times. Conversation usually starts with me asking how her week or weekend is going and then quickly peters out, but she invited me to go dancing last Saturday. I missed the message, and had I seen it the friend with whom I was hanging out would have resented me taking her home prematurely.

If I were to want to carry a fit woman that was 73" tall, I think that would depend more on my own exercise than hers! :)

Good ole' George (Santayana, not Bush) nailed it with this quote:

"Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it"

Can you say "short memories"?

I think a lot of people don't really comprehend the difference between the (unattractive, to me) sort of skinny that comes from borderline anorexia, and the slenderness that often comes with being in real good physical shape.

Same principle applies to guys: being 6' and just under 200 lbs with a 32 inch belt size is a heck of a lot different from same height & weight but a 40 inch waist.

320touring 11-14-2014 05:03 PM

To be fair, now i dont have to do 600 miles a week for work, my station commute cars get between 11-20 imp mpg..

Although I'm hunting down another vegetarian diesel ;)

Cobb 11-14-2014 10:30 PM

Big cars for big butted girls? Too weird for me!
Taking Frank's opening salvo as the majority opinion on the subject of cars, I immediately rushed out and bought a very well kept 1990 VW TD (no I) Jetta with tons of new spare parts for $1600 cash.
The car has 237K miles but the engine has <100K miles. When the car burps, I intend to hook the engine to a Geo Tracker manual tranny (Acme Adapters, of course) and drop them into a Triumph Spitfire frame with a Locost body on it. Then I intend to burn a mix of used tranny fluid and veggie oil since no one is into tranny fluid so it's free.
But a question for VW owners, past or present: Reverse is springloaded, of course, but to get to first gear, I actually have to push just a little into the spring loading. Does anyone know if that spring can be adjusted to leave first gear just outside the loading? Any info will be gratefully appreciated.

Although let's be honest: declining sales could be from other factors too, like competition.

cowmeat 11-17-2014 03:09 PM

I wouldn't recognize either one if it passed me going the other way, I have no idea what either one looks like. You may have a point there, Metro.

MetroMPG 11-17-2014 03:41 PM

Oops. I meant for this to be a reply in Frank's thread about big car vs. small car sales. Computer's are too hard!

Lemme see if I can figure this out...

Frank Lee 11-17-2014 04:18 PM

It seems to be a thread about booty...
