Going over to ethanol gas

I am considering a 400e modification for my car, that makes it run on 85% ethanol gas.


Did your consumption rise more than 30%?

Even if the consumption goes up to even 45%,

I would save 108 bucks a year, so it would pays itself in about 4 years.

if it only goes up 30%, It would pay itself in 1,5 years.



you think it's worth it?

The gas prices can go up quickly. We have heavy taxing on gas, when oil prices got down our gas stayed the same price :rolleyes:

The car i'm going to convert is my War wagon.

I've posted very many times that I run E85 in my non-flex-fuel vehicles with no modifications whatsoever. Sometimes the CEL comes on but since I know why, I ignore it. Only real issue is cold start in sub-freezing weather; I simply use E10 then, or if I'm making a long trip, I burn E85 on the trip then fill at or near the end of it with E10 for the next cold start.

With both the GM FFV I've owned 2002 Suburban and current Impala I lost/loose 18-20% with E85 vs E10. 20% cheaper is the break even cost per mile in my experience. Half price is a no brainer.

With a conversion kit I'd expect it in the 20-25% range vs E10 as it doesn't have the advantage of different timing maps that FFV have.

Funny, this question makes me think we might need to use "MPGe" for ethanol too. 30 miles on a gallon of ethanol would be 45MPGe due to its energy content, nevermind price.

I've ran e85 but the car doesn't like to enrich too much without throwing cel.

also the cold starts are a pain in the butt.

The 400buck system is plugged in the fuel injector system, and prolongs the open time of the injectors by 40%.

It's a piggyback, so all other systems would work in normal conditions. That'll probably reduce consumption vs. un-modded.



it features an ethanol sensor, and adjusts itself, so you can use regular gasoline. It also adjusts itself to cold starts, which is nice.

a friend of mine had the system in his mk3 supra, and it worked nicely.

if the system works nicely, maybe I could get my dad to install the system in mom's Volvo. Drinks 24MPG premium

I got the deal. It's 482 bucks.

Hmmm, 80% max injector duty cycle upped by 40% gives 112%........

May as well connect the injectors straight to to the battery and hope for the best when overtaking.

This system is on par with fooling the ECU by stuffing a resistor into the temp sensor circuit. It is a not so cheap hack.

but I found another kit for 200 bucks. it's diy.

I could even remove it for emissions testing, if I cannot get a certificate of emission compliance.

This is nice.

when I get my hands on the kit, I need to do A-B-A testing. If the consumption decreases significantly, I'll get the kit for our Volvo V70 :D
