Golf Cart Motors
 
Two years ago I started ridding an electric motorcycle that after 7 years of design, planning and dreaming it became real.
I used a 21 spline EZ-Go golf cart motor, 48V of GBS lithium batteries and a few parts I designed and machined, plus many off the shelf parts.

CNC machining is an expensive option, many home machine shops don't have the tooling to make these parts either, so I spent the time in the shop to build the tooling needed to make these adapters, then bought the cutters needed, check around and you will find people who either failed or who hand sculpted a one off part that didn't even fit right.

I've been machining copies that are a better fit then new factory parts.


So what do you want?

So far I've got an Ez-Go motor, a GE/Club Carg motor and a few Honda motorcycles.

A keyed shaft would be easy, if you want one let me know the size.

Other brands of motorcycle can be done give time.

Don't hold back on ideas.

I have a small machine shop and to work around the high cost of CNC equipment and I've made jigs and tooling make production faster, the old way doing it.

So while I could make custom parts, I'd rather stick with small batches.

I picked up my two golf cart motors for $100 and $150 cheap for 6.5" motors and they are all over the place!
But golf cart motors lack the bell housing on the drive end, so in making the drive end bearing support and shaft as a bolt on part.
While in making that motor end, why not make it fit a project, so that is what I did with my motorcycle, saves space, weight and Money.

I'm currently making some motor adaptors for the Honda cx500, next the Honda Shadow, but maybe you want a hybrid truck, or some other idea, why make a one off part?

Good idea.

The only thing I can think of off the top of my head is a chill plate for Paul's new AC and DC controllers. They generate some serious heat. I expect that they would need to get rid of maybe 300W - 400W continuous with peaks in the 2 KW range.

HI, I am designing and rounding up parts to build an Electric, two seat, 4 wheel light Utility Vehicle. I'm going to use two motorcycles for the suspensions, and I want to start with the 48 volt Club Car motor I have ( I think, it's been so long since I saw it). I obviously need a shaft and bearing plate for the motor, if that is something you could make, I'd love to discuss it! I will probably direct mount it to a small differential with a flex coupling, so it doesn't need to take chain stress ( outer bearing). I have a thread on my project, it's at Fossil Fuel Free..."I want a Hybrid Side by Side". Hope to hear from you soon!

CFECO, that is the exact kind of project in thinking of!
I'll be sending you a message.

There are two main types of golf cart motor drive ends, both are an unsupported socket, one is 10 spines the other is 21 splined.

I'm set up for the 21 spines and am working on the ten spline motors right now, should have it by end week.

Here is my motor, 10 spline. I don't know yet what I want for the output shaft yet, I need to find a small differential to divide the power to the two chain drives ( see my project at the Hybrid page if you want), "OR" modify the golf cart rear axle and use it by narrowing the tubes and axles.

Yes I have given that quite a bit of thought, originally using two of the Mars type motors. I've been reading that motors don't like to be wired together, series or parallel . This according to what I've been reading, so that is still up in the air. Then the is the increased cost factor, I'd like to avoid.
