Hi guys
My names Daniel and i drive a 5 door 1998 Toyota Starlet which is currently powered by a 1.3L inline 4 with a 4spd manual gearbox.:turtle: I havent been too interested in fuel economy untill the fuel price rise a few months ago when $20nzd was only getting me 8.5L of 98 octane. Im just looking at getting my fuel to last a bit longer on my trips to work each week. The best L/100km usage i have ever managed was 6.5l/100km I think my car is rated at 6l/100(~39mpg) from factory with a 5 spd manual. Looking forward to learning a few new techniques. Cheers |

Ecodriving is free, and you can probably add a fair bit of fuel savings from learning how to use less throttle, coast more, use the engine for braking, etc. Some aerodynamic mods are very inexpensive, too; and they can double your savings. |

I'll start by saying that my car isn't completely factory any more. I have changed most of the body panels, started a cold air intake, added a rather large exhaust and done numerous handling mods. Can't post a pic as I don't have enough posts yet. I occasionally attend a few drag or track days so that may effect economy a little. The route I take to work consists of few up hills, 100kph zones, motor ways and windy roads so hopefully there are some driving techniques that I can use. |
hey bro im from arrowtown, first of all use google maps to find a more flatter way to work.
the route i used to take was 9km but had LOTS of stoplights, the route i take now is 16km has 1 roundabout and i use waaaay less gas. also dont forget maori overdrive (putting it neutral for abit then putting it back into gear) pump your tyres up some more try getting those hills right by neutralling down them and then taking your time up them, remember when going up a hill try to keep a constant speed |

Just looked at your spec list for your starlet, very nice work :) I want to get a kp in the future but cant afford to run a 2nd car at the moment. I should probably get a vacuum gauge for mine at some point. Probably after i put in the new engine |
yeah the old kp62 is a good runner, has a hole in the manifold at the moment so its getting shocking economy, bloody good cars though they dont make them the same, m going to be transplantin a 4k-eu motor in it son which is fuel injected and has the twin squash head and is 100cc's more, the 1.2L just isnt powerfuill enough and the 4k is more efficient :), just bloody hard to find

Ive read about the 4k efi on club-k. Hasn't it got the same power but torque is lower down in the revs?
I have a 5e-fhe (110hp 1500cc) which i am almost ready to swap into my car with a 5 spd. :D The motor is cool as its got an acis intake manifold (4 long skinny runners & 4 short fat runners and a valve to swap between the 2) which aids low end torque and supposedly has better economy than my current motor. 1300cc (72hp - dyno proven :p) |
You'd be better off going with a 4E-FTE if you wanted a fun car that gets good mileage. The ACIS manifold bolts right up to a 4E head also. Guys running the 4E-FTE in their Tercels and Paseos over here get 40 mpg pretty easy.

I was considering doing a 4efte swap but my dad didnt like the idea of me owning a turbo unless it was a turbo diesel :confused:
Seeing as i already have the 5efhe ill get it put in and if i get bored ill attach the turbo gear off a 4efte :thumbup: The 4efte should equal the fuel economy of a 4efe if you take it easy and stay off boost. Its essentially the same engine. |
