Gray-water for toilet?

Hey Folks!

Has anyone done any work with gray-water systems?

It seems to me that re-using your shower waste-water to flush your toilet would be a fairly simple thing to do.

Who cares if your toilet water is drinking quality or not!

Anyone ever done anything like this?

If only there were some sort of forum dedicated to these kinds of questions...

Oh snap!

Official announcement in the morning.

I sense an evil eco empire emerging.

Ben will be a benevolent dictator :D

Could also plumb into the washing machines waste water as well. If someone is really picky the water could be run though some kind of filtering mechanism and maybe some coloring just for visual appeal

Yeah, washing machines could work too.

I think some sort of basic filter would be needed no matter what (keep hairs and things out) as well as a holding tank, some sort of pump or pressure tank, and shut-offs/bypasses.

It would also need to be designed to still run water to the toilet even if the gray-water tank is empty, and divert water off to our black-water tank from the shower/washer/etc. if the gray-water tank is full.

As a backup; you could put a toilet valve at the bottom of the gray water tank it would just keep the water level at a minimum, yes some waste, but a cheap and easy way to keep it up and running.

Now that's a good idea. It would automate switching between waste-water and fresh-water. That's the kind of ideas we are looking for!

Great,
another forum to belong to.

Thanks

It's a great idea,
but the gray water could make the bowl look less that clean,
and if you're married to a clean freak (like some one I know well)
it could be an issue.

could use one of those cleanr tabs in your toilet tank just make the water blue and she will be happy
