Has anyone used traffic cones for fairing material?
 

I've been looking for something that would make good fairings for in front of and behind wheels.

It came to mind that traffic cones are tough, tapered, easy to cut, and inexpensive. (To be clear I'm not considering stealing them. There's no reason to - they're cheap and available in different sizes and colors.)

Has anyone tried this? Have a BTDT?

That's not a bad idea.
Trimming the big hole a bit, it could be mounted even closer to a tyre.

In front of a tyre you could even use one that's turned upside down - which gives you a mounting flange - and cut to length

Possible source of non-orange cones. I haven't tried these.

18" White Safety Traffic Cone, Parking Cones, large cones, road cone for cheap white ones.

So, after paving the road in front of my house (I live at the end of a culdesac) the D.O.T. left 4 large traffic cones that have been sitting there for months! Nobody has come back for them. Nobody else has paid any interest to them in any way at all... :)

So... I'll let you know how the mod goes. Thanks for the idea!!!

All well and such, but what if you hit something with a coney fairing?
My OEM fairing strips are rubber(or rubberlike) and quite small. They already have some dents and schratches despite of that.
You don't want it to become a road hazard.

I was thinking about constructing fairings from thin polypropene plates, which are cheap, sturdy and slightly flexible. Most of all each plate would fold from the 'base' (the upper part touching the existing bodywork) like the petals of a flower. The seams would be glued or molten together, but break loose if hit so the sides would just flap about, maybe, but not come loose.
If only I had the time to build it... (I should be working right now!)
