Hello from Germany!

Hello Forum!

First of all: excuse my bad English, I try my very best!
My name is Albrecht, I live in Germany and I own a 2001 Passat Variant with the reliable and very efficient 1.9l Turbodiesel engine with 131hp.
I love driving economical and wherever I go I try to maximize mpg.
I primarily do that by optimizing my driving style, not by modding the car. The only change I made is adding light 15"-Wheels.

I once did an experiment wit a friend of mine to find out how far we can get on one tank of fuel, results where pretty good. We made a video which I will post in another sub forum.

I am looking forward to the communication in the forum!
Albrecht

Welcome, Albrecht. Your English is excellent. I too aim to achieve good fuel economy by driving style, not mods.

My daily drive to work is through the city on non-congested roads. This is 3000km/year (1865mi). But I drive another 20.000km/year (12427mi) on the motorway (max 120-130kph (75-80mph)) which refers to a total average consumption of 5,5l/100km (42mpg).
When I drive on the motorway a steady 120kph on cruise control, my car uses exactly 5,0l/100km (47mpg).
Reducing that to 100kph (62mph) reduces the fuel consumption to a very acceptable 4,1-4,5l/100km (57-52mpg). Without using any hypermiling-techniques!

I know it may become more difficult nowadays due to the witch-hunting against older Diesel-powered vehicles in Europe but, just as a matter of curiosity, have you never even considered trying vegetable oil as an alternate fuel?

I was stationed in Germany for two years and miss that beautiful country. Arizona is noticeably less green. I attempted to learn the language, but whenever I attempted to practice my German, people responded in English.

Welcome!
