Hello from Indiana

Hello fellows ecomodder.
A little intro from a newbie.
My car is a 1998 Honda civic Lx auto. 165xxx on the odo.
Hoping to learn a lot from everyone.

Just picked up some vx wheels for cheap. Hope to start the journey to improve FE out right.
I have done all the regular tune up. All factory spec and parts. Cap, rotor, wires, plugs. 10w30 Mobil 1 full synthetic. Purolator oil filter and air filter. New coolamnt and new ATF. New brakes also.

Already have a scan gauge type (ultragauge) to monitor everything.

That's it for the moment.

Welcome to the site.

I recommend adding a garage entry and fuel log. What kind of mileage are you currently getting with the Civic?

Civic98lx 01-16-2017 02:12 PM

About 30mpg which isn't bad for winter. What hurts the most is in city, I live 5 mins from my work. So it doesn't get up to full temp. Then on the weekend we would go out of tow. Mostly highway driven. We live about 1hr either north or South from nearest major city. That's where most of the mileage comes from.so maybe 30% city and 70% highway. Fill up about every 2 weeks. Sometime 3 wks if we don't go out of town for anything.

My daughter and son both have that same generation civic in a 4 door and they're both LX's. I know in the Summer they get around 37mpg and they have decent driving habits for economy from watching me drive my VX hypermiling of course :) I think most cars lose about 10-15% fuel economy in the winter with a stock vehicle. Parking your car outside will likely put it closer to the 15% drop. This is why you need to mod your car so winter won't have so much impact.

Got a grille block on it yet? Block heater?

Civic98lx 01-21-2017 09:59 PM

I've been looking into a block heater. I park it in the garage when not in used. Block grill is coming soon. Hoping to find some coroplast to make one.. I've increase tires psi to 44. I need to calibrate my ultragauge. Its close but still off.
If anyone have suggestion for block heater, please post here.

Thank you

So far, I am seeing 35mpg. That's pretty good. Considering the only I've done so far are increased psi to 44. Kept the engine at or below 2500rpm..
Throttle % (according to my ultragauge) at or below 20%-22%..
At idle, no load throttle % is 9.41-9.91%.. So say 10% is fully closed. So in keeping the throttle around 10-15%, I am seeing improvement.. Speed is at or below 60mph.. Yes, cars were passing me. I didnt mind.. I have a goal and intend to keep going for it..
35mph on winter gas = :) all day long..

Not bad for winter!

I'm pretty stoke at the result so far. Can't was it til summer to see how much it will improve. Just ordered a vac gauge. Really looking forward to testing it out. Once extra funding become available, the vx wheels will get new shoes.. Fingers crossed with that it may yield some decent result..
