hello my name is joe

Hello I recently bought a 00 civic hx and had a few questions. I love the car and this sight seemsight seems very useful... making me excited to work on her. Main question right now is about my tranny. I bought my civic as a 4 speed but I noticed that there doesn't seem to be a 4 speed hx. I'm wondering if they swapped it out for the 4 speed or if 5th gear is just broken or something. When I attempt to shift 2 it feels exactly like neutral, not catching on anything or grinding. Also was wondering how to check the tran to see whether it is a 4-5. Thanks in advance and look forward to modding with you guys from now on

You should have 5 gears. I don't think there's a 4-speed that's a direct swap.

For that model-year there was no 4-speed manual Civic anywhere in the world. You might have just got a faulty transmission...

What would you guys do? Scrap car? Repair/replace 5th gear? Or seek out a better tran to dwap out? Best option for tran if I do swap it?
Thanks again

If the tranny is its only faulty item, it doesn't seem reasonable to scrap the whole car.

A trans swap will probably be simpler and easier than overhauling it. For a 15 year old civic, a used unit may cost about as much as the new parts for the overhaul.

yeah i was thinking the same thing (about being a waste to scrap it). the company i work for will order the tran for me with their discount and our mechanic estimated about 4-6 hours labor. working on finding the transmission now but im having a hard time locating one specifically for the hx, its looking like i might just have to buy a wrecked hx and have him take it out of that. would removing a transmission and prepping it for a swap be something i can do on my own? really want to get this car up and running, thanks again for your input guys

Yea anyone can do it. Anyone can do anything if you got the correct tools and patience. It's freaking bolts and screws and clips get dirty and use some muscle...

We get that question at work sometimes. The real answer is... I don't know, is it? It won't call for much in the way of specialized tools, but if it's something you can do isn't a question for anyone here.

I guess that was kind of a broad question. I assumed that people would assume that I did nothave a well equipped professional garage at my disposal because if I did I doubt I would be asking in forums.

Anyway you were correct on that (and any correction your next post may have on my grammer) sir, and as I was always told in the ARMY ...assuming makes an ASS out of U and Me.

My question should have read "...something I can do with basic tools (floor jack, wrenchs, a functioning body and semi functioning brain)"
But yeah if could toss your opinion in on my transmission situation I'd appreciate.

Thanks.
