Hello Everyone

Hi, my name is Greg and I was driving my Chevy Silverado 2500HD Diesel to work about 40 miles round trip each day. Needless to say this is not a good commuter vehicle.

So I bought myself an inexpensive commuter car with about twice the gas mileage of my truck. It paid for itself in gas savings in the first 9 months.

But now I have gotten the bug for trying to squeeze more mpg out of it. I read up some here on driving techniques for fuel savings and have already improved my average mileage by 5 mpg! I purchased a vacuum gauge as well but have not had a chance to install it yet.

I have one question. My car says to use 92 octane or higher gas on the fuel door. I have only been using 87. The 92 octane is about $.20 a gallon higher. Will I get better mileage using the correct octane fuel and will this increase be enough to offset the extra cost?

Thanks for all your knowledge, this is a great site! If you are interested in my car I put it in the garage and have logged my recent mpg increase in the fuel log.

Greg

This might help in filling out your info in the garage Gas Mileage of 1992 Volkswagen Jetta
I have noticed a fuel economy differance in some of my cars, as much as 10%, in other cars I have had, nothing. The only way to know for sure is test it your self. Hope to see more.

Thanks for the EPA info. I think I will wait to get a steady baseline on my mpg from eco-driving, then I will try the 92 octane for one tank and see if I notice a difference.

Welcome to EM! Establishing your baseline is a great idea. At 40 miles a day you will build up plenty of "data" over time.
