higher mpg Toyota pick-up
Saw a '92 Toyota pu, 2wd, manual trans withe the 22re engine. Seller claims up to 35 mpg freeway. Is this possible in stock trim?

Best I have got is 31mpg in my 4x4, so the 2wd with same engine, lighter and lower to the ground, definitely 35mpg would be easy to attain in that truck.
|
Maybe in top gear (if its manual) at 35 mph. At freeway speeds (~65 mph), nope.
|
I drove a 92 2wd 5 speed for 11 years and never got 35 highway. I would not expect anymore than 30 at highway speed and even then you would need summer heat.
Best small trucks ever made in my opinion . |
Define "freeway/highway speed".
That's the critical point. |

The epa ratings are only about 27 so 35 seems a little optimistic. |

I'd say it's possible. I average 26-27 mpg in my 4WD. That's all driving; highway, dirt roads, snow, &c, and often driven with fairly heavy loads. I don't do long freeway drives in it (or much in-town driving), so no separate breakout of my highway mpg.

Most driver remember their best tank ever, even if followed by their worst.

I had an 85 Toyota pickup, 2WD, manual, extracab, with 22R engine. I got around 29 hwy, 25 city, was EPA rated 27 hwy, 22 city. 35 hwy seems very optimistic.

In my '00 Tacoma I could get 35mpg for several tanks in a row during the warm months. 4 cyl., 5 speed, 2wd, ExtraCab, standard bed. Then they took it away for frame rust.

I just got my '93 toyota truck (4cyl 5-speed manual) so I don't have really good numbers for my MPG, but I got on a trip to upstate New York I averaged 25.5 mpg@ 70 mph, and 26.5 in the mountains never exceeding 55 (except coasting down hill). But I got all this with 4 people and a bed full of luggage, food, and materials for a rental house my family owns.
What I'm trying to say is that 30 mpg for a 4cyl truck isn't impossible but I think 35 is stretching it without some aero mods. |
My lifetime in 94.5 year toyota pu with 22re and manual trans (last one before tacoma) (mostly suburban travel very rairly on highway) is 27.2mpg. Thats 100,400 miles (not the vehicle I post about here). I've put 205/75/15s on it instead of 195/75/14s. Only other mod is alternator disconnect and 15 watt solar panel on dash. In summer I can run without turning on alternator. In winter I run 50/50. I've gotten into the 30mpg range on only 5 tanks out of the 315 fillups. Have my doubts on 35mpg.

My 4 cylinder Ranger is getting around 31 mpg around town and about 36 mpg highway, as seen in my fuel log. The only aero mods I've made are a grill block and about a 5 inch extension to the back of my topper.

My 4 cylinder Ranger gets about 31 mpg local and about 36 mpg on the highway, as shown in my fuel log. the only aero mods are a grill block and a 5 inch extension to my topper, plus blending the topper into the cab.

My 4 cyl 2WD truck gets high 30's at 55 MPH on a warm summer day with no wind. And 40 MPG with a tailwind. On a zero degree day with a headwind, I'm happy to get 30 MPG.
I'd believe 35 MPG from that truck on a hot summer day with a driver who's smooth on the gas pedal. |
I've done it. I have a cab-height bed topper but no other mods. I've cracked 35 a few times and come close to 40 once. My truck is similar, carbed, no FE.
Did you buy the truck? |
