Holy ****! Honda insight 1.0L replacement costs!?
Dealership near me wants 4000 for the block and 2000 for the head unassembled and uninstalled. Wtf! They really don't want these on the roads anymore :(

You lost me at "dealership" . . . . .
Not sure I understood what you meant, it sounded like you thought you were going to order parts from a dealership, but I know that can't be true |
Quite apart from the dealership question (were you born yesterday?), you're talking about low-demand parts for a low-production vehicle. Why would you expect them to be cheap? Indeed, I'd say you're lucky they're even available.
So why are you buying the parts in the first place? If you've blown an engine, do what any sensible person does, and search salvage yards. Seems like there are a good few available, from about $650 up: Search Results |
My point exactly! I assume you're just messing with us.
Dealership is always the absolute last resort if your car is out of warranty, and in the case that you'd need an actual major component, if there's not one available in a part yard somewhere in the world, it's time to just think about retiring the car I walked away from a good deal on an Insight last month that needed some work on the CVT for this same reason |
Have you never lurked about an engine swap?

Aw. My CVT allows the tiny 1.3 engine to power the not too light 2nd gen Insight along at 62 mph at only 2000 RPM. Or, typically, 50 mph at only 1600 RPM. Doing 60-70 mpg.
Yes, in the hands of a skilled eco driver a MT Gen 1 can get much better economy than a CVT Gen 1. But that does not mean the CVT is bad. Anyway, in danger of elaborating the obvious: If you want to know more about (cost)effectively keeping Insights on the road go to the ultimate Insight site Insight Central: Honda Insight Forum |
Did you ask them for a quote on a rebuilt engine? I was quoted 3500 for a 99 geo metro 1.0:eek:

I honestly thought that reliability was more of a concern than economy.
