This is how they prevent people from asking how much a hydrogen car costs.

It honestly doesn't look quite as bad in person. Still, that front end... why?

Ishka bibble.

redpoint5 12-21-2017 04:31 PM

Haven't seen the Smart, Leaf, or Element? Much worse looking.

I'd say this car looks about average. I spend 0.1% of my time looking at the exterior of my vehicles compared to the time spent inside. So, how does it function?

sendler 12-21-2017 04:34 PM

It's ridiculous! As if they had three people split the car into thirds, front middle and back. And draw what they wanted without looking at what the others were doing.

Part of the anti theft system.

Xist 12-21-2017 05:10 PM

I get excited when I see a car like mine, as long as they have taken care of it.

Is the interior any better?

Would be greatly enhanced by offering it as a 6-speed manual only.

MetroMPG 12-21-2017 08:07 PM

I'm used to the idea that I'm going to make my cars look uglier through liberal application of duct tape, coroplast, cardboard, plus maybe some sheet aluminum and poorly made fiberglass add-ons.

With this Clarity, Honda's done all the work for me! Pre-uglification!

I might accidentally make it better by covering up parts of it!

Frank Lee 12-21-2017 11:09 PM

Aztek owners everywhere are pleased to finally pass the Ugly Crown on.

Stubby79 12-21-2017 11:44 PM

Looks like every other current(ugly) sedan in the new car market to me.

It's like Bumble Bee got stuck mid-transformation on his way to becoming a Tesla S and Honda said "too late to turn back now boys, just go with it"

cRiPpLe_rOoStEr 12-22-2017 11:35 PM

It looks quite disproportionate with that front overhang.

Piotrsko 12-23-2017 09:47 AM

More important: what are the numbers? Is all that ugly aerodynamic?

sendler 12-23-2017 11:45 AM

Unfortunately ugly does matter. Nobody is going to buy that thing at a normal list price regardless of what it can do.

freebeard 12-23-2017 11:59 AM

All it needs are rear fender skirts and a black vinyl bra.

The Accord hybird gets 49mg combined on gas with its 2.0L engine. The Clarity's engine is derived from the Accords, but downsized to 1.5L (paired with the same electric motor). It gets 42mpg combined on gasoline.

It costs more, looks worse, has a smaller engine, and gets worse fuel economy?

Frank Lee 12-23-2017 07:50 PM

"Clarity" huh. It only looks good when your glasses are smeared with Vaseline.

And when it's ugly and underperforms its direct contenders, maybe even if it had been offered at a heavy discount there would be a chance of failure. Comparing it to the Prius and the Fusion Hybrid, it's very unlikely for the Clarity to become sucessful.

redpoint5 12-24-2017 03:30 PM

The Clarity goes nearly 50 miles on a charge though, so only the Volt beats it on range. Combined power output is 212 HP, which is quite powerful. It does look hideous, but it's priced lower than its rivals and has way more features. The interior looks upscale.

For $26,000 after federal credit, you get a car that goes 50 miles on a charge, has over 200 HP, and has advanced features such as adaptive cruise, lane keep assist, and automatic emergency braking.

Fixed it for you, it’s a big car, you look at the inside of the car most of the time so those looking for a bigger car the Clarity PHEV fits.

Now the Clarity hydrogen or EV are total compliance cars but the plug in hybrid is quite compelling

Maybe it is a snowflake retro ugly is cool kinda thing?

freebeard 12-24-2017 07:13 PM

Those rear wheel arches are definitely right out of the 1980s.

I guess ugly is in the eyes of the beholder. I don't think it looks that bad. Some people will like it even if you guys don't. Look at the Nissan Cube. Now that has got to be one of the ugliest cars ever made. It's grotesquely ugly, in my opinion, and people still bought it.

iikhod 12-26-2017 03:21 AM

It isn't always a bad thing to drive a "ugly" car. At least it stands out a little in the parking lot.
Call me an wannabe unique snowflakey, i kinda like the appearance. Reminds me a little of them big citroens :D

That's what I was thinking of when I mentioned Honda Element! The Cube reminds me of women who have long beautiful hair, and then just shave one side of their head. The Cube is made for those bad haircuts, or are those bad haircuts made for the car?

I have only seen a Honda Element once, and it didn't really look so awful. When it comes to the Cube, its rear hatch could've been better-looking, but at least it seems quite functional.

MetroMPG 01-08-2018 10:11 AM

yet it's selling well???

Quote:

Most impressive of all among plug-in hybrids, however, was the 898 Honda Clarity Plug-In models sold in December, only its second month on sale.
Honda also managed to deliver 527 Clarity Electric sedans, bring that battery-electric model's total to 1,105 sales last year over five months.
For comparison in December...
  • Chevrolet Bolt: 3227
  • Toyota Prius Prime: 2,420
  • Chevrolet Volt: 1,937

RedDevil 01-08-2018 10:21 AM

It is mainly ugly because of its big LED hooks under the headlights.
Think those away and it gets better.

Funny that that same feature does look acceptable on other cars like the VW XL1....
