How can I achieve max MPG with a little help
Strange question for an even stranger purpose.
If I wanted to draft behind a vehicle for maximum MPG gains under controlled conditions what would be the ideal shape of the object in front of my vehicle so I can draft it at a safe distance? I hope the question is not to confusing ... |
Busses work well for me.

Some show (might've been mythbusters) built an extension on the back of a trailer that stuck out and and empty, then they pulled a honda insight up in the back inside of the little box. I figure that's pretty good.

Yeah, if you can fit somewhere that won't interfere w/the wake of the vehicle in front of you, you're essentially in a vacuum.... most efficient place to operate would be in a vacuum where the engine could still get as much air as it needs without sac'ing VE.

A flying brick wall with a Kammback that fit around your car would most likely be best?

Something with a low bottom edge. Semi trucks are bad for this. Tour buses are better.
I agree about the Kammback part, too. Basically, build a box and drive your car inside it. ;) |
The bicycle land speed record guys ride almost inside a truck.
Here's the video :http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Py94okBKDU0 The low bottom edge is right on the ground, and the lead vehicle upper edge is upward. |
So the questions begs, would it be considered cheating to attempt and beat that mpg record by using a pace car similar to the one bicyclists use? You technically are not modifying the car attempting the record, just giving it the best shot.
