How fast do you think I was driving?

So, I was rear-ended by a full-size work van on the freeway. The back bumper had minor damage and that was it. So, what happened here?

https://i.imgur.com/RVfkb3t.jpg

I always figured that the best way to remove Gorilla Tape required removing the bumper, but can I get it back on?

You can see the top of the $35 resonator that I bought from LKQ when the tire blew and damaged everything in the vicinity. I seriously wish that I knew what happened, but my family suggests that a year and a half of bouncing down dirt roads didn't help.

I cannot find an 1999 Accord 2.3l intake resonator on LKQ or car-part. The best price that I can find on Amazon, eBay, or any dealership is $90. Majestic has the lowest price, but highest shipping.

redpoint5 11-23-2019 12:45 AM

I'll say you were going 0 MPH.

I was hit in the Prius on the freeway. Did practically no damage, just a scrape in the paint. I told the kid not to worry about it.

Xist 11-23-2019 12:57 AM

Do you have any suggestions for finding it on LKQ or parts-com? I cannot find it!

redpoint5 11-23-2019 01:03 AM

Can't you hot-glue it back together?

What's the PN? I'd search for that rather than Honda Accord intake resonator.

Then there's always the local junk yards.

The only local junkyard does not have any Accords [or Civics] of my generation. The power steering pump was common to many Hondas, but the resonator is specific to the 2.3l Accords this generation.

It is 17230-PAA-A01, but that does not help with LKQ or car-part.

Hot glue? That only works for pulling dents (80%). Gorilla Tape holds everything together!

I drove my car without this resonator, but I planned on plastic-welding and then wrapping with Gorrilla Tape, but there are missing bits. If I am lucky I could have a near-stock experience until I can get a[nother] good resonator.

Since I cannot find any other resonators I looked for donor cars for some reason. This one has one!

No bumper and no cat, although the engine supposedly has 50,000 miles from Japan.

It wouldn't be worth buying for the hood...

You have probably seen the external latch setups the kids use on their cars to make the bumper cover quick release. One part is on the fender and the other is on the cover with some kind of a rubber band holding it together. My bumper covers are only held on with plastic push pins from the factory. Saturn L200.

Drift stitches!
Like in that picture below, but drill small holes to your fenders and edge of bumper.

Xist 11-23-2019 08:37 PM

The bumper seems to be intact, except for where it fastens to the car. I am welding the resonator back together, but the heat keeps turning off, so I am unsure that I will ever be able to finish.

Better than ever!

The cargo strap is a nice green and I trimmed the piece that was hanging down! It just seems silly to wait for the windshield to defrost before pulling into the garage, but here we are.

Perfect! :D

Xist 11-24-2019 12:22 PM

If the tow hook were in front it would work, but the cargo strap did not stay attached in the garage, so I walked to Church today. Barefoot, in the snow, and uphill both ways!

by JDMSPEED
JDMSPEED Black Universal CNC Billet Bumper Trunk Quick Release Fastener Kit.

On Amazon these are inexpensive and will hold your bumper cover on.

Xist 11-24-2019 09:51 PM

Goat Overlord says that drift stitches do not hold up in the Arizona sun: https://www.amazon.com/JDMSPEED-Chro.../dp/B01HMAGBAS

It sounds like they should come with replacement bands or at least have them available for order because they dry-rot.

Piotrsko 11-25-2019 10:26 AM

How about the hood pins from the '70s where you drill through the hood above a frame member? Summit racing has them.

Or take your green hold down and go wheel arch to wheel arch if it has S hooks on both ends.

Have you tried a heat gun on the gorilla tape? BTW that was a nice job you did on that cover.

I reattached the bumper on Monday

I used a soldering iron to melt a piece of aluminum drywall patch into the bumper, and then melted scrap plastic (the same type as the bumper) onto the mesh. I sanded, drilled holes, and reattached. Close-up of each patch:
https://ecomodder.com/forum/attachme...1&d=1574862796

I need to remove the Gorilla Tape, take off the bumper again, sand down the patches, hit them with an adhesion promoter, primer, and body-matched paint, as well as fill in the scratches, sand, and apply adhesion promoter, primer, and paint.

One issue is that I cut the aluminum mesh by the tire a little too big, so I need to carefully trim that before I can hide it.

My 1,300 watt plastic welder from Harbor Freight stopped blowing hot so I used a 25-watt wood burner, which did not seem to provide enough heat and the first tip fell out while I was using it. I realized that I had a 40-watt LED soldering iron that I do not remember buying. This 80-watt plastic welder may have worked better than anything that I used, but Harbor Freight closed before I got there Saturday night, and did not open early enough Monday morning. That plastic welder also comes with steel mesh, which would at least be stronger than the aluminum patch that I used. The bumper is polypropylene and so is this cheap plastic folder that I bought.

This seems to work great, just make sure that you trim the mesh a little smaller than the patch that you need so that the edges are not exposed.

I think that I linked this car somewhere. If it can make it to Show Low I could put the wheels, resonator, and cat on my car, pull out other parts that I think would be useful, and have the rest hauled away: https://offerup.com/item/detail/785471883/

I feel frustrated that I missed this. There are Accords being sold for parts, like this V6 (wrong resonator) that is the right color, although the hood is worse for wear. The bumper is already detached!

That is probably bad: https://offerup.com/item/detail/786910357/

Then there is this one the wrong color with one picture, zero details, and bizarrely the finger is hiding the roof. I cannot imagine why a junkyard would do that on purpose, but if it had a sunroof it would tell me which submodel it is: https://offerup.com/item/detail/134600880/

Since I cannot find the resonator on car-part.com, at least I have a couple of numbers that I can call that have mostly-complete Accords.

There is something seriously wrong with this Accord! https://offerup.com/item/detail/785891993/

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Late to the party, but I use car-part.com when I'm looking for used.

Where do I find it?!

For the third time, I cannot find the part on car-part. Linking the site does not change that. If I look for "Intake resonator,"

https://ecomodder.com/forum/attachme...1&d=1575029545

it isn't there, nor is it under "resonator:"

https://ecomodder.com/forum/attachme...1&d=1575029844

There isn't a search function, so how do I find it?

Gasoline Fumes 11-29-2019 08:26 AM

Pick a junkyard with decent prices from car-part.com and ask if they have the resonator. I've gotten unlisted parts that way before.

Xist 11-29-2019 08:32 AM

Research the prices of parts that I do not need? :)

Piotrsko 11-29-2019 10:39 AM

Research the vehicle you need, parts are optional.

Gasoline Fumes 11-29-2019 06:56 PM

When I needed a filler neck for the Nut Wagon, I looked for a yard with a cheap gas tank and asked if they had the filler neck. They did!

Xist 11-29-2019 08:31 PM

Car-part calls it the "Air Tube/Resonator"

"Car-Part.com could not match your request."

At least now I know what they call it.

Weird. Someone on reddit gave me almost the exact same suggestion. IPDaily, is that you?! (not his username)

Xist 12-02-2019 09:50 PM

I found another junkyard, just over half an hour away. The lady confirmed that she had one (or more) four-cylinder Accords of my vintage, but she did not know what an intake resonator was. They had one V6 and two 2.3ls, but neither of the latter had their resonators. One had the frame bent in that exact spot.

I heard back from LKQ! They want $86.47!
