Story about near cross country trip on a single tank of gas?

Somewhere in my travels, I remember hearing about a story of someone driving (I think?) a full size Ford pickup nearly across country on a single tank of gas and still having some fuel remaining in the truck when he arrived?

Does this story sound familiar? Am I close?

Is there somewhere I can read more about this story, or other incredible stories like it?
