Attached is a spread sheet showing total cost for different cars..
just change the two values in the upper left (dollars per gallon for cost of gas, and miles driven per year) and see how much MORE or LESS the car would cost in total than a toyota yaris. This started out as a ms excell document,( I did not create the original) and I updated it on openoffice in fedora (I dont do windows :D). I don't THINK it has a windows virus, but I have no idea. |
Does that factor in depreciation and maintenance and all that as well?
you got me on that one.. No the only maintnace is battery cost allowance, and the only cost on the car is original purchase price. I never even thought of depreciation.
And if you find any errors in it please mention it. :)
Yeah, doing depreciation I think is what makes it really tricky. I imagine edmunds spent a lot of time on that bit.
I guess it only matters if you keep the car a short time.. I have 5 year and 10 year time markers for the costs, and I usually only get rid of a car by giving it away free..
Plus I would claim depreciation is not predictable... Back when gas was inexpensive, the depreciation of a gas-hungry vehicle was not much. Now with gas prices as they are I suspect the depreciation is much worse..
(waves hands) :D |
HAHA, well my car is listed on that list .. whoo hoo, so I punched in my average numbers and guess what for me the Matrix came out at #1. LOL
I know its a little unfair because I have never eco-driven any other models on the list, but my numbers are real and therefore my car is currently better than a hybrid.... |
