Park & Diamond: Foldable Bike Helmet

Quote:
Park & Diamond™ is an ultra-portable, stylish and collapsible bike helmet that looks and feels like a traditional baseball cap. It will comply with the U.S.Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Canadian cycling helmet CAN-CSA-D113.2-M and EU EN-1078 safety certification standards for the protection you need and a style you'll love.

* Collapsible, comfortable and breathable
* Stylish and replaceable skin
* Hand washable layers
* Weighs 8 oz
It is supposed to work better than a traditional bike helmet and looks like a ballcap!

What? Your hats don't have straps? Weird!

Quote:
The Park & Diamond Bike Helmet’s patented protective material absorbs and dissipates three times more elastic energy than a traditional bike helmet, which means significantly less energy is being transferred to the head, and making the Park & Diamond Helmet a better bike helmet.
Millions of people do activities every day for which they should wear helmets but they do not because they are lame--not helmets, but irresponsible people.

Edit! The website! https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/p...-bike-helmet#/

This is a conventional motorcycle helmet inside an oversized ballcap:

What I like even more is that I see a kid at work that wears a helmet to school. Do you think he would prefer a P&D helmet?

I know I would.

Of course I would probably wear it without the cover, so it looks more like a geodesic dome. I have to figure out how to get one without doing commerce on Internet. I already told my son if he gets one I'd reimburse him. He uses credit cards and everything.

Have they met their funding goal?

It looks like they started crowd-funding after they had well over a million, but they are still funding, even though they are about to ship:

Am I missing something? If it collapses in your hands, what keeps it from collapsing when your head hits a curb? Seems like it would be far better than nothing, but I don’t get how it can beat a traditional hard shell design

If it collapses when it hits the curb then your skull failed and you should probably talk to someone about it. It is better than a traditional hard shell design because you can fold it, but more importantly, it absorbs more of the blow, instead of transferring it with its rigid design.

I'll just glue a hat on the top of my fullface-bicycle helmet and call it a day.

If I understand correctly, the tapered segments are hinged on the outer surface and spread inside to fold. There seems to be a tri-lobed construction too.

The outer fabric shell would act as a compression ring to prevent the segments collapsing.

OTOH I've been wrong before. Once.

I thought that was, "I thought I was wrong once but I was mistaken."
