Intro to Rolling Resistance
Looking for more information on lrr tires for my upcoming purchase, I found and watched the below video. It is a very simple introduction to the basics of rolling resistance in tire design and so maybe it will be useful for you too:

So, my summer tires are bald on my VW tdi. Now what?
The factory MXV special energy michelins are now very extremely bald. The factory replacement is pretty spendy. $121 ea. Wet road performance was unimpressive and winter performance was noticeably awful.
The goodyear version in the new special compound is significantly cheaper at 90 and maybe some rebate money. Online reviews of wet wet/snowy weather performance are pretty good. So, Anybody know of data to compare actual rolling resistance between these two tires? Thanks in advance, troy |
...did anybody else notice these two inconsistencies?
1) especially at the end of video how one ball (the "new" compound) always came out of the "launch box" faster/sooner than the other ball? 2) how the "old" compound ball ran out of movement just prior to the crest of the roller coaster so it never makes it to the end of the roller coaster, which visually makes the "new" compound appear to roll further...which is true, but only because it crested the first rise and has the 'new' down hill slope to roll down. The samething (new down hill slope) happens with the truck demo. |
Add to that the balls dont roll on the bottom of the track, but on the sides of it. Friction between the ball and the side of the track will come into play which would have nothing to do with actual rolling resistance.

Michelin demonstrated their point with 2 real cars on different tyres, rolling back and forth in a half-pipe.

The local NTB guy here likes the michelins (energy/primacy) quite a bit better than the goodyears. He's too much of a salesman for me to buy everything he says, but he does seem to know a good bit about tires as well.
