Just had my BEST TANK!

69.1 mpg, over 678.8 miles in my 2000 Insight.
Wa-hooo!!!

AND - This weekend I plan to clean the EGR manifold passages. That should give some additional improvement.

cowmeat 06-23-2016 02:39 PM

Nice job!

FYI - I happen to know from experience you can drive at least twenty miles with zero bars showing on the gas gauge, so I expect to see you in the 700s next tank:thumbup:

Daox 06-23-2016 02:55 PM

Woohoo, congrats. :)

I dunno about that 70+ mpg thing. Maybe! I've been languishing in the mid-high 60's for a while. I believe I lucked out with the weather on this tank.

But yes - it should improve with a cleaning of the EGR passages. I've been spraying the nuts and bolt heads with PB Blaster in preparation. Very rusty. They look awful. The gasket and 3 o-ring things are ready for me to pick up at local Honda place.

Check the torque on the plugs while you're at it, they tend to back themselves out on these things.
My first Insight was running a little rough when I bought it and I assumed it was the motor mount/3-cyl issue. But I went to check the plugs to see if they needed to be cleaned, and found that one had worked its way almost out of the hole, the only thing stopping it was the coil being screwed down

Ecky 06-23-2016 05:32 PM

The plugs do tend to back out on these motors.

My driving technique is still being refined after two years; it's largely what is responsible for the improved mileage.

70 is just an inch away. Keep going, you'll do it!

Also, this thread has good info. I wondered how far I could go on the gas gauge and had no idea about spark plugs backing out! How often do you guys check those?

Ecky 06-24-2016 11:29 AM

I found mine loose when I decided to change my spark plugs preventatively about 6 months after getting the car (~1.5 years ago), as they were still the original plugs at 170k miles, so far as I could tell. I haven't checked them since, but ought to. I'll report back whether I find them loose or not this evening.

I check my plugs about every six months (basically I pull the coil boot, put a socket on them and make sure I can't turn them easily).

Just got started w my 2000 TDI 5 speed Beetle, pre-SGii, 49.87MPG. Had a 93 Civic Hatch 5 speed, best on that was 47MPG. That car had the special VX or HX engine. Someone stole it while I was on a Valentine's Gig a few years back. Come out 2:30 in the morning & no car! Had so many rust holes in it, friends called it the cheese curl car, spray foamed the holes, haha!:D

Thanks for the challenge. Today's fill just squeaked into the 70's,

I don't like displaying my ignorance, but where in heck are the plugs? I'm old school. Apparently they're under the coils?? But I don't know where the coils are or what they look like.

I can always find the plugs if they have a visible spark plug wire going to them...

cowmeat 07-05-2016 05:06 PM

Pull the plastic cover off and they're on top in back, under the coils. Coils each have a bolt on top, pull them off to access the plugs. If you care about the index, the letter is stamped right next to the plug holes. Mine are the wrong index but I'm too cheap to change them out since it would take ten thousand miles to recoup the cost

And nice job getting into the 70's!

Thanks cowmeat.
I'll have to take a look after I leave work - it's quittin' time now. My plastic engine cover lives on my workbench, so I can skip removing it!

Does anyone here know ANY good reason to keep the cover on?

Ecky 07-05-2016 05:21 PM

The coils are on the backside of the motor, just above the exhaust header. They're held in place with 10mm bolts (I think?). The plugs are underneath them.

Some engine covers have insulation on them that can help keep and engine warm. If not you could add some :)

Dave's Civic Duty 07-06-2016 12:49 PM

Agreed! Keeps heat in & noise down!

Ecky 07-06-2016 12:59 PM

The cover on the Insight does neither. Mine actually rattles very slightly, but I leave it on anyway, for reasons I can't articulate.

NoD~ 07-06-2016 01:05 PM

I pulled mine off. I thought "But it looks so nice with it"... then pulled it off and haven't looked back. If anything, I might put it back on with some insulation under it, just to help keep a bit more heat on the engine.

Maybe...

I mean, it's a whopping 1.09 lbs of weight saved with if off! :)
