Karmann Ghia streamlining with Photoshop
I was thinking of how someone could add a full boattail, and front and rear wheelskirts to a car, and not have a car that looks odd.
It would be a shame to destroy a classic car by doing something like this, but as you can see, some might acually even call this car 'cool' - yet it has a full tail and skirts on all the wheels. I'm also in the process of building a model of this thing ( both real world and 3D ) http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3492/...be04e5a6_o.jpg |

Ghia oddity
Cd,the Photoshop image looks great. My Ghia is already "roofless" and awaits EV conversion, but will collect much dust before she rolls again.------------
I like your boattail, however my back would never survive it for engine/motor maintenance. Also,If I boattail,it will also come in on the sides as well,to tailor the wake a little better.-------------------- As an air-cooled VW,provision would have to be made to protect engine cooling,so the diffuser portion would have to be very well thought out,or you could risk cooking the engine.-------------------- Also, with the cantilever engine placement,VWs are as you know, prone to oversteer once you exceed the limits of adhesion. If your tail has much mass, when you break loose back there, the car will really want to swap ends!---------------------------- Also the front skirts will have to move like basjoos or tires will tear 'em up.------------- Your image is kinda like a chopped/channeled/and sectioned Merc..For some this will always look "odd." I'm kinda past the point of concerning myself with whatever others think about the appearance of cars so it's not an issue with me.If I see you on the street,I'll know what your up to and you'll be gettin' the big thumbs-up from my direction.Looks good, just don't cook it or destabilize it. |
Are Ghia's like bugs in that they have the twin beam front ends? If so it can be cut and shortened to minimize the flair out of the front skirts. Otherwise that would make an awesome electric. I would remold the trunk to add battery weight to help compensate for the rear engine and boattail weight.

Looks cool. The Ghia is a classic, but there are a lot out there in bad-bondo shape, so you could use that as a base without feeling tooooo guilty.
