To immediately derail the thread, I've recently been thinking about the railgun method of sending payloads into orbit or beyond. Apparently a few concepts had already been proposed and given the name StarTram. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...eneration2.jpg For some reason I had it in mind that a decent amount of speed could be achieved to accelerate people at 5G in perhaps a distance as short as 10 miles. This proposes a distance of nearly 1,000 miles to accelerate at a leisurely 3G. |
That looks easier to draw than to instantiate.
It would need to be straight as a laser, else at orbital velocity occupants would be shaken up and down and side to side. That might work on the Moon where there is no atmosphere. |

CO2 battery -- as efficient as pumped hydro at one quarter the cost. The trick is compressing the gas at ambient temperatures so no heat transferred as with compressing air..

Don't fast compress it and it won't get hot but you're still putting energy in. What about it cooling when you release it?
