Most aerodynamic VW rim?
Need tires, looking to switch rims to a narrow 17 or 18" OEM 5x100 vw rim. Is anyone familiar and can suggest?
Here is link to all 17s https://www.myturbodiesel.com/d2/100...base-5x100.htm |
All 17s
I looked at all of them and nothing really leapt off the page.
None of Volkswagen's low drag concepts have used anything as shown. Typically, they're choosing wheels/covers which are very close to the MOON Equipment, spun-aluminum, convex disc covers as raced at the Bonneville Salt Flats. Do you do a majority of high-speed cruising? Any 'opening' in the wheel will induce a 'windage/ ventilation drag' upon rotation. Even if enclosed behind full wheel skirts. You need a minimum for brake cooling even though the brake rotors are designed to absorb all the kinetic energy of panic stops without fade or warping. The GM Ultralite concept, circa 1992, has an example of minimum porosity wheels of low drag. What's your ultimate goal for the car? |
Yes sir, 2x a week i commute 6 hours.
The reason for 17 or 18 rims is i need a taller tire. Its TDI beetle. When I got back to oem spec tires I lost mpg because the engine went up 200rpm it always feel like I should shift again. I want more rim and less rubber |
FWIW, the tires for those rims seem to be biased for handling, traction and not economy. I'm stuck with 17"s because I have the german big brake calipers, but dang does it corner and stop good.
2 grand in a diesel is overwound and less efficient generally |
Mine is close to 2700 keeping up with traffic. Really needs a 6th gear. Or extra tall skinny tires

Uninformed opinion, but to a Type I owner seven inches isn't narrow. I like this one. Right-sized cooling slots. |
I used to consider the Acapulco wheels quite good aerodynamically-wise, but anything bigger than 15" is a reproduction which may be of a much lower quality than the originals.

Ok so this is my first ever post on this forum so G'day, the hubcaps on the wheels of a VW ID3 seem to be very areo dynamic and also the retro style VW Transporter wheels with hubcaps, no idea what the stud pattern for any of these wheels are and weather they will fit your car.
