MPGuino install: '90 CRX HF without splicing into Harness

hi!

When I bought my HF,I wanted two things:
A fully working MPGuino
and a still "intact-uncut" harness.

And long story short, after a little pulling my hair out,etc I got it figured out!
:thumbup:This is here to help other people that want what I wanted,I know I can't be the only one..

So here it is,vehicle in question..

Behold,1990 CRX HF totally stock minus JDM D15B shortblock.
290k(and counting,:D)

Now let's get to the good stuff, this is your ECU.Hidden under a panel underneath the passenger's feet closest to the firewall.Held in with 4 10mm nuts, carefully pull back the carpet, and you'll see it.This is also useful for OBD purposes but we'll get to that later...Voila,here she is in all her OBD-0 glory ;)

Notice mine has those wires coming out, that corner of the panel is lifted up and has one screw left out? There's a reason for that.I decided to solder directly to my ECU pin's VS cutting into my harness. The reason?IMO it's wayy easier to replace a ECU VS replacing a entire harness in the absolute worst case scenario things went 'haywire, and I've seen them for sale as little as $25 online..

Let's get to the basics,a MPGuino,needs 4 things:
Injector feed
VSS (aka Speed Sensor)
Positive wire
Ground

I decided to go right here for my Injector feed.

And for the VSS,I went to pin B18 is it?

Here's a PM8 pin-out for reference

And for my positive wire,I went through the fuse panel and found a 'empty' fuse that wasn't used for anything and just used a spade connector,it's nice and solid it fits just like a fuse would.

For my Ground I did this,it's by the upper-right side of the fuse-box, nice solid mounting point as well.

Hopefully at this point, you've got a Guino that will now turn-on and register your speed-pulses but needs the correct "settings",and this also show's how I mounted mine.I tried the 4x2x1 box from the 'Shack' and honestly it was such a pain to adapt over I threw it away,haha.Double-sided tape works just fine,as long as you have the good quality stuff.

Press the three buttons all at once to enter the settings menu.

Now I know I left some things out,but this covers the 'jist' of it.

I'm all about soldering and clean installs, nice soldering by the way, but to go through the effort and just leave it bare on the column? I dunno man.

thx!
I tried using the 4x2x1 Radio-Shack box but it was more trouble than it was worth.
It required *heavy* modification to work and in the end it would've looked hacked together for what I had on hand to do it with...besides I like the bare PCB board look.

:D

To each their own,and it's solid!
It's not going anywhere

good enough for my house! what kind of motor are you running, mbolton1990?

do you by chance run a dual vtec jdm d15b? I've got a guino coming and have been reading around trying to find settings that will get me "close" for mine.
Thanks!
Victor.

Hey buddy!
That'd be awesome, and eventually I am going to run one that or a D15Z1.
As of now it has the D15B6 8-valve roller rocker head on it,and it runs suprisingly well.Especially considering the fact I'm running 16v pistons with a 8v head.

I'm kind of torn in the middle honestly..The Z1 is a incredible motor and the 3 stage is the best of both worlds..I actually ordered a head off of eBay and UPS damaged it in shipment by the time I got it it had bent valves and a broken solenoid. So I'm keeping my eyes open for another one ;)

Oh I should also add the fact that this car got a nice set of Civic VX rims the other day with brand new Pirellis :)

Veddy nice!

sweet. I wish I had vx wheels and sexy rubber. I run 14" steelies with (new) farm and fleet tires.

thanks for the kind words, and you are right about the best of both worlds on this dual vtec motor! I've never had better fuel economy or performance in my minion than after I realized the jdm d15b's full potential!

I'm going to try your numbers when the guino comes in, and I'll get back here and post up my results in case you get a dual vtec running.

The hardest thing for for me to get my hands on was the actual dual vtec solenoid - when I found mine there only seemed to be one available anywhere online, and it cost me $100

Good luck - I hope it works out for you! In case you do go dual vtec, I've put up my guino settings on the mpguino wiki: MPGuino - EcoModder That should get you close:thumbup:

Will come in handy - though I'm doing a head swap onto a D16, so maybe more a starting point... managed to get a 3-stage head (apologies to mbolton) shipped all the way to Aus without damage, now it's sitting around while I gradually clean it up...

vrmouseyd15b 12-06-2014 10:44 AM

MADACT - is your d16 block lean burn ready? Are you ready for some fun? The d15b2 (Jdm 3 stage) is rated at about 128 h.p. , only about 50 more than the American counterpart :)

are you going to run a manual tranny? Sounds like fun! Please share some pics of your head, I'm curious. What is the code on it and year stamped? P2J?

I'm 3 stage vtec on the minion, and would love to see and hear about more 3 stagers out there! Any help I can offer, just ask. Feel free to p.m. me. I've got a few wiring references, and some hard learned tricks as well!

Edit: what ecu do you plan on running?

Thanks,
Victor
