were there ever any FE comnscious muscle or pony cars? other then 4 and 6 cyl mustangs, cars that could actually boogie if wanted?
|
All the 67-70 pony cars had eco models
I had a 66 stang w/ the 200 ci straight 6. had a 2.87 rear ratio I know the first gen cameros had a straight six. THe ford falcons 6x-66 had straight sixs |

dont know what I am looking for, 30mpg and 300 hp? and older
|
30mpg 300hp and older.
how bout the new v6 mustang? its 300hp 30+mpg and retro styled? 2 of 3 has to be worth something. as for a real say 60s mustang. the only way to get the same specs would be to do a retro mod build. v6 or v8 fuel injection the works. but in the end you have a old classic car that runs and drives like a new one. trans is also a big factor. you dont want a 2/3/4 speed. you want a 5 or 6spd 2012 and 2013will be better but look at this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WGZB4qe4d-M |
even the small engine muscle cars from the 60's didn't get good gas mileage. if you're interested in having a classic car you can look at older european sport cars like the OPEL GT or British 2 seater roadsters, but if you want american the only thing you could do is swap a newer, efficient motor in a older muscle car

How bout adding a little 2-cyl putt putt-engine in the rear with it's own tranny to the diff?
You could tune the V8 for all the power you like. |
2011 Ford Mustang V6 runs 776.5 miles on one tank, 48.5 mpg [w/Video]
* The 2011 Ford Mustang V-6 sets a new record by averaging 48.5 mpg on a track while completing 1,457 laps with an average speed of 43.9 mph The 3.7 V6 can switch between atkinson cycle at part throttle and otto cycle at high load. Brilliant engine design. |
In short, it will be really difficult get 30mpg from stock-looking 40 year old cars unless you go the Japanese route with a first gen Celica, Plymouth Arrow, Honda Prelude etc. Those might get you 30mpg without engine swaps and will be really fun to drive. With engine swaps and suspension work they'll haul. Also look at first gen VW Sciroccos. That or a Rabbit with a, say, 1.8 turbo swap will get you where you want to go.
'84 Prelude was rated for 29mpg highway with the 1.8 5spd. http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/Power...de&srchtyp=ymm 84 Dodge Charger 1.6 4 spd was rated for 35 hwy! http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/Power...er&srchtyp=ymm If you want a classic car, get a classic car. If you want good MPG get something with EFI. The only way you'll get both is fuel injection. |
I'd love to have a turbo CRX. With a small turbo on a 1.5L VTEC motor you should easily see 200hp and still get 30+ mpg. In an 1800lb car, 200hp is a lot.
Or, you could drop an Integra motor in it and get 200hp N/A. |
