my 98 civic project
1 Attachment(s)
So here is my 98 civic ex. I have started modifieing it since i got it going last summer. I have mostly done stuff to help fuel mileage.
Front lip Warm air intake Lower grill block New polyurethane suspension bushings Lowered 2 inches Adjustable camber Synthetic oil 195/50/15 tires Flater rims Suspension alignment The car came with cold air intake and header. I removed the cai and made warm air intake. I added a bigger aluminum aftermarket radiator to help keep cool with grill blocks. I need to adjust timing but not sure where i should adjust to for leaner burn. I want to get a different transmission. I read that the civic hx has higher gears to keep rpms down and was wondering if any other model does too? I kinda estimated i got right at 35mpg before wafm air intake and lower grill block which i did a couple days ago. Any feedback and help would be welcomed and appreciated. http://ecomodder.com/forum/attachmen...0&d=1392261306 |
Here's some tranny ratio info: http://ecomodder.com/forum/showthrea...ios-26279.html Basically, the EX sedan and coupe have the worst ratios for mileage, anything would be better. From that link, it looks like the best is found in the HX, CX, and DX/LX hatch.
As far as other mods, I recommend getting an Ultragauge or Scangauge. Then you can see your instant mileage and make sure your grille block isn't making it too hot. |
Cool thanks for.the link. I want to get the scan gauge eventually. I dont get hot but its not real hot outside so ill keep an eye on it when the weather starts warming up more

Haha someone did all the work for the 99-00 front end.
Before you do the swap list your ex trans on CL, there is always someone wanting those as they have the best ratio's for acceleration. I found my 95 VX trans in CL for $40, people just flat out don't want the DX CX/VX trans so you should be able to find one for cheap. I got the torque app for my phone for $5 and a bluetooth ODB2 reader from Ebay for 9. They work great. I still want to get an ultra or scan gauge but can't really justify the costs, though I installed torque and got an extra 4 mpg's last tank :) SO these will eventually pay for themselves, but the 169 scan gauge will take awhile lol. I got the SiR lip, was looking at the same lip you have. I was thinking at the time, would taping off the 'vents' help? |
Thanks poomanchu, the front end swap was easy i do all my own work.
Ill look into the torque app and the obd2 reader, sounds simple and inexpensive, what all does it do? My transmission has a grind in third and i want to get a different one before i take this one out. Also my throw out bearing needs replaced too is a little noisy. |

Torque is an OBD2 reader, much like scan or ultra gauge. I get an annoying evap check engine light and this clears it no problem. Too lazy to get the purge valve :p You can customize your gauges and layouts and what it reads, pretty neat. https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...l.torque&hl=en In the meantime GM syncromesh (available as Penzoil syncromesh) cured my 2-3 grind in my gsr trans (thats all I run in any Honda still have 2 quarts of MTF i need to give away). I'm a believer of it lol. That TB though... Good luck! |
Thanks i appreciate it!
Im going to get the app and obd2 reader now. I will probably pick some synchromesh too. It only grinds when i shift fast but when im.driving easy saving gas it doesnt grind. When i get a different tranny ill definatly change the thow out bearing. I would get the evap check light too but havent in a while. |
No problem!
Be advised since I've talked it all up, some of the gauges have a half second or so delay. Like I will shift, then my bar graph tach (ghetto s2000 style lol) will register it right when I hit the next gear. Not perfect, but for the monies... Can't wait to see your results from the trans swap, should be pretty huge xD |
Lol ok ill keep that in mind.
Yeah i cant wait to get the tranny swapped once i find one, im trying to save money since im getting married soon and my fiance has a kinda expensive honeymoon planned lol, plus we have to travel from new york to oklahoma. So hopefully i find a good one for inexpensive. |
Got the blue tooth obd2 reader ordered and downloaded the torque pro app, cant wait to get them working together and see how it works out.
Anyone know what the best timeing would be on my car i need to time it i have been putting it off and im sure it would help my fuel economy. Also my exhaust is missing from the rear axle back, it was like that when i got.it. its not loud at all but was wondering if it.would help my fuel mileage with more backpressure. The rest is stock other than the 4:2:1 header. |
