My Aeromodded Civic Bumper

3 Attachment(s)
I had a spare front bumper for Thrifty McGassaver (my VX) and this is what I've done with it so far:

Done with the help of a buddy of mine that I work with in the summer. Took about 20 hours to get to this stage. Next up is a lower lip air dam.

Damn... that looks nice.

Any way (not that you'd want to now) that you could move the air inlet to the middle, and use the plate as a high-speed grille block?

Or even block the bumper's grille altogether, and use a pan-scoop under the plastic bumper cover to scoop air up into the radiator area... Again, not that you'd want to now.

That bumper cover looks sick, though. Great work.

Did you ABS-weld it, or just add FG, or is the whole thing FG/CF?

Took an OEM bumper and filled with Great Stuff foam, shaped foam, then fiberglass jelly'ed for a hard surface, sanded and shaped the jelly and then Bondo'ed for a smooth finish.

All in all I will plastic weld my next one I do this winter. It will end up being less work and better results. There is a touch of separation on this bumper already.

I made this bumper for use in winter here in MN. I like the results so much though that I will be doing something similar with my summer bumper.

The inlet is on the side because that is where the radiator sits in my Civic. The factory block off is still intact next to the radiator as well so I just made the opening over there, similar to how my summer bumper is setup but you can't see the opening on my summer bumper. I have a grill insert that hides the Coroplast grill block.

I had thought about closing up the whole front since I'll be using it for winter, but after it snows a little, the opening will get packed up with snow anyways, lol.

And Ben, don't be jealous, we can do something like that for your CRX bumper too once you get done with your swap.

I like it.

I like the psychedelic plate- I have a t-shirt kinda like that!

vtec-e 09-11-2009 04:16 AM

VERY nice! It'll be interesting to see the reaction from ricers. First they'll see the carbon hood and think you are a ricer. Then they'll see the bumper and look confused! Excellent!

ollie

They all think that I want to race, even after I had put the giant MPG stickers on the back and side of my car.

pgfpro 09-11-2009 10:24 AM

Very nice work!!! It looks like its a stock Honda FE bumper. If there every was a thing? j/k:thumbup:

Closest thing Honda had was a factory grill block that stuck in behind the grill slats and I guess putting in the stock fog lights since that would fill the holes on the sides of the bumper.

It would be super cool if Honda had offered a bumper like this from scratch. But then the drag racers would jsut have one more reason to molest a perfectly good VX, lol.

Christ 09-11-2009 02:39 PM

If the bumper is made of ABS (I can't remember) you can use Acetone to melt pieces in a cup. They'll turn to sludgy paste, and then you scoop that out and slap it on the seams, agitating and letting it dry, so the Acetone melts both surfaces and eventually they all mix together w/ the filler.

Man, what an nice looking project. Who would have thought that we'd have "summer bumpers" and "winter bumpers"! :)

You've inspired me to get off my butt and start work on a new feature for EM for threads just like this: a "registry" of mod projects (where you click a button in any thread documenting a project and that adds it to the list).

Moderated or not?

I thought about something like this last week, but never said anything about it... my idea was basically to have a registry feature that one could add his or her (hah) own mods to, but it would be global view...

This way, the user could add his blog-type build in pictures and posts, and set up an index to each section of a project (if it's warranted), while users looking for mod projects can click a link, similar to the 65+ Vehicle modifications for better fuel economy - EcoModder.com link, and the resultant page would deluge them with links and preliminary images that would give a good idea what the mod was about, like a library page of mods.

Click the mod that you're interested in, it takes you to the build blog, with a link to the original thread for each project, if the reader is interested in the extraneous comments and such.

I wonder if there is a wiki template for this?

winkosmosis 09-11-2009 11:20 PM

Looks awesome. I like the asymmetric hole... it gives it a futuristic look

yeah, I have summer and winter wheels, summer and winter bumpers, and summer and winter intakes. Maybe I need a summer and winter car?

That would be sweet!

I will definitely get pics of the dam up when I finally decide on what shape I'm going for.

I'm either going to cop out and just do the garden edging (since it will be plowing a bit of snow) or maybe something a little more appealing, if I find some ABS that is shaped properly.

greasemonkee 09-12-2009 04:45 AM

Very clean and stock looking. This gets me brainstorming on how to do my integra bumper.

That's quite a contrast of items on the front end, ranging from race car to eco car. :D

majestic 09-12-2009 12:15 PM

I like it. Reminds me of S2000 from the front

Wonderboy 09-12-2009 02:51 PM

Very nice work, Tom.

orange4boy 09-12-2009 04:52 PM

Sweet mod. I likey. Wish I had 20 hours kicking around. Wait, why am I sitting here?

I actually spent a few hours a time on it over a ten day period. I was helping a friend coat a wood floor so I would have 4-6 hours in between coat applications to work on it.

Looks great! Over the pond there, do you guys have the option of making the number plate flush in the bumper? Or would that be slightly illegal?

Google "Frenched license plate" on images... you'll see all sort of modded cars and trucks that have the license plates every direction but straight... as long as it's visible, I don't think any state cares how it's mounted.

saturn19 09-13-2009 08:16 PM

nice bumper it really does look stock

tmessenger 09-13-2009 08:26 PM

I just picked up a 95 DX coupe and the first thing I did was get rid of the wide tires it came with, looks like you've got some big meats on your car are they detrimental to mpg?

TomO 09-13-2009 09:06 PM

I run 215/50/13 tires in the summer, Sumitomo HTR 200. And the winter tires are 155/80/13. I might pickup one mpg if I ran the skinnies in the summer but with the way I corner a d do autocross, I end up running the wider tires during the summer

Cd 09-13-2009 09:12 PM

Your bumper actually adds to the racer look.

I don't want to jack this thread, but yes that was the idea, except anyone could add any project-related thread to the registry (I think that only threads where the member actually did something will be eligible). There are a lot of valid project threads in the archive and the owners may not be active any more. And, yes, the idea was also to tie the registry to the 65+ mods list.

Watch for something this week.

Christ 09-13-2009 09:40 PM

Sorry, Darin, I thought I PM'd that to you...

Great work !

I actually have that same lip on my summer bumper, lol.

I do agree though, my car looks more and more like a race car when I do stuff to it. It looks right at home on the autocross track.

tmessenger 09-13-2009 10:39 PM

OK not much difference with the 215, mine came with 205/40/16 and road like rocks.

Thanks.

The temps have remained the same as before. The bumper on there before was grill blocked to the same opening, you just couldn't see the coroplast because I had a grill insert over it.

The opening is more than enough for the winters here in MN... I might even make a temporary plug of foam to put in it for winter.

TomO 09-15-2009 11:04 AM

UPDATE:
I started making the front lip last night. I nearly have it completed. I just need to stop at Home Depot on the way home from work to pick up some more supplies.
Expect pictures tonight or tomorrow morning.

Home Depot is my favorite Auto Parts store, lol.

Deezler 09-15-2009 08:42 PM

Pics of the lip!

I have been contemplating making one myself, since I can't find anything commercially available for under $100 bucks. Even some of them still require modification.

Did you find anything at the depot long enough to cover the entire width of your car in 1 piece? I have a source for 4x8' sheets of abs plastic, but can't stomach the price to only use a 8x60" chunk.....

NeilBlanchard 09-15-2009 10:06 PM

Hi,

I would love to see pictures of the construction of this -- it sounds like I (for one) could use this on my grill blocks!

TomO 09-16-2009 09:55 AM

Quick "in progress" shot since I'm home taking care of my sick girls today and didn't get it all finished yet:
http://img34.imageshack.us/img34/7818/dsc01496v.jpg

I still have four more brackets to make and to coat the lip in black Plasti-Dip for rock chip protection.

The lip material is called FiberEdge and the brackets are made from 1/8" thick x 1" aluminum flat stock that I measured drilled and bent.

Christ 09-16-2009 12:22 PM

Wanna race? vroom... lol

Deezler 09-16-2009 12:25 PM

Wow, looks good. I'll wait for the daylight pics to judge, but that looks more like an air dam than a lip spoiler... just sayin

TEll me about it, I'm going to get twice as many ricers revving at me now, lol.

I guess you're right, it is more of an air dam than spoiler.

I actually finished with all of the fabrication part of it today while I was at home with my sick kids. I might even get to painting it tonight and then I could get some pics in the light tomorrow.
