I need a longer seatpost than what is commonly available (or available at all?) to ride the ubiquitous MTBs, so I weld two seatposts together. That's all fine and dandy but the leverage of having that seat being 12" away (from the frame to the clamp) is pretty bad from a structural standpoint. Sure enough, over a couple year's use my long seatposts begin to bend back. Luckily it has been just the posts and not the frames!

Anyhoo, I've just made the answer for this:

It is a light gauge tube, flattened and drilled both ends with the upper end under the seat clamp nut and the other attached to a clamp around the frame tube made of duct strapping, isolated with bicycle inner tube rubber mainly to keep from scratching that immaculate paint.

This being my winterbike, the salt was awful tough on it even though it was a record-breaking mild winter. I wire brushed the corrosion off the post, greased it, and installed that nifty bicycle inner tube sleeve to keep the grease on the tube and off me.

Ain't nothin that beats triangulation!

I'd considered using cable and turnbuckle... and that may be something I do try, eventually, as this system lacks much seat height adjustability, and that would be lighter- as if weight on this iron pig is a concern! :rolleyes: Lack of adjustability hasn't been an issue though- nobody else rides my bikes. Heck, I don't even lock them up, I figure I could pick my bike or any potential thieves (tall enough to ride it) out of the crowd easily enough.

P.S. I figured if I did need adjustments, I'd add a separate clamp to the post.

Now...THAT's what I call a "ball buster! ;) :eek: :D

It's flat-foot straddleable but yeah, any miscalculation and I'LL KNOW IT! :eek:

Be very careful when coming to a stop, could really hurt the boys with that set up..

You think he is that tall? My thoughts were that either the bike is smallish, or Frank likes to be on top of things. Think - small person in huge SUV with jacked up suspension. Here's his next bike project:

Seriously, good engineering. That's actually a problem I had on my previous bike: back in high school I'd have to stop every 5 minutes to pick my seatpost up off the pavement and put it back into the frame. If only I'd thought about triangulation!

Ha ha! When I get that red bad boy done the mud truck idiots will really have to crane their necks to look up at me! I expect it to still be streetable; time will tell.
