My Wife Want's a New affordable 40MPG Car
 

Hi Guys,

I really haven't been in the new car market for quite a long time. So she looked at the Nissan Versa, I think this is the cheapest new car on the market right?

Her Dad used to love his Nissan trucks.

Many import car makers are hitting this 40 MPG mark, it's about time.

Do any of you drive any of them?

Any input would be appreciated,

I drove a eco chevy cruze (42 mph I think I recall....) and it was badass. Had a few options and it booked out at 19. If the diesel version wasn't coming out in a year or 2 id go buy one.

Take a look at the Hyundai and Kia offerings too. Also, don't rule out a slightly used Prius.

Keep in mind that unless you buy a hybrid car that 40mpg is only for highway miles or hypermilers. The Cruze, Fiesta, Focus, etc. are all rated for 30-34mpg average. Not 40mpg.

My sister-in-law has a Versa and loves it.

You might also want to look at the Toyota Corolla. I believe Consumer Reports got 40 mpg highway in their test, even though it's not rated that high by the EPA.

Long time Nissan fan here. Wife just bought a Kia Sorento. I would seriously look at the Kia and Hundai offerings. My gut feeling is the Japanese auto makers have peaked, while the Koreans are coming on very strong.

The warranties offered by the Koreans are hard to beat, free roadside assistance for 5-60 and 100k power train.

The Sorento compares to the Murano as far as weight 3800# and size, although the Kia has better interior volume. Wifey is averaging 27 MPG in her 4 cyl Sorento with less than 800 miles on the odometer. 32 highway in a 3800 pound SUV is amazing.

I considered the new Versa but I am going to keep the 99 Maxima we got back from her daughter.

A new Elantra or Kia offering would be my choice if I bought new. They are also made in America.

What is the chevy sonic going to get does anyone know?

With the 1.8L the Sonic is 25/35 with automatic and 26/35 with manual trans. The official ratings aren't out for the 1.4L turbo yet AFAIK, but they're claiming it'll hit 40 hwy.

I hope to be hitting 40 mpg in my import. :p

Also, in my experience, imports tend to offer much better fit and finish than their domestic counterparts, so all things (e.g., mpg) being equal, I would choose an import over a domestic.

I'm driving the 2012 Focus and getting 36-42mpg when I take the initiative to save gas. I'm very satisfied with the car it cost me 20k plus TT&L. I drove everything on the market close to it and picked it up. The new Camry hadn't hit the market yet so I didn't compare that one.

The Focus has a great suspension and holds the road right along side most of the sports cars I've driven. It has great usable power and plenty of room in the car for all the people, gear and toys you'll need.
