Mystery device can unlock & start 50% of vehicles
Yet another reason to love old-fashioned keys...
Quote:
The testers stress this wasn't a comprehensive or scientific survey. And some makes weren't succeptible (2017 Chevrolets for example were less succeptible). Also: the device has to "capture" the signal from your key fob. It needs to be anywhere from several inches to 8-10 feet away to do it. Video! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EE5Ygm0aFMk |
If I had one I'd just start half the vehicles in town and let them run.
Nobody would notice though. :/ |
Im assuming this is for vehicles that have leyless ignitions. Im safe
|
Exactly - the "proximity" keys that the driver just carries in a pocket, purse etc. The car unlocks as you approach and you push a button to start it.
|
Yeah I don't have that.
|
I always thought push button start should be banned
|
It makes me glad that my van has the two keys for it. One for the doors and one for the ignition. I don't have to worry about someone finding my hide-a-key and driving off, because it only unlocks the doors. :D
|
Sounds like it would mainly affect cars with proximity keys, not necessarily push button start. My Prius should be safe, then, I don't have the smart key system so I have to stick the key in the dash for it to start. Hurray for not having all the options!
|
and my celica only has a steering lock... JDM models don't have an immobilizer.
I should put a safety switch somewhere. Warwagon has a keyfob thingy you have to wave before the receiver to remove the immobilizer. I never remove the ignition key or the keyfob, it has a separate key for the doors. No one can start the damn thing for sure, as the fuel pump needs it's own ritual in order to work |
Another reason I installed a Ravelco unit. And pulled fuse that allows remote door unlock.
