New car new member can't exceed epa
Hello new member here.. bought a new hyundai Veloster (m/t) with hopes of getting at least the epa ratings but have failed thus far... I'm no stranger to driving slow for mpg i used to have a Mazda that had an instant gauge but the Hyundai doesn't. It only has an average. I've ordered a bluetooth adapter to use my phone to monitor for now. I've already put my tires just below sidewall rating and I've been logging on fuelly with my best being 39 when I'm rated at 40hwy.
Hoping to exceed that 40 mark soon. Anyone else on the forum have the 12' Veloster or elantra(same motor) |
For checking others with that car go up to the top and click garage then you can just search your car to find who else has it the best i found for urs was the 2011 elantra

How many miles on the car? The first 1000 or so you won;t see the greatest numbers. What are your driving conditions? All city, all highway, or a mix? I'm sure your car can whoop the heck out of the EPA numbers unless you have a terrible commute. What rpm are you shifting at? Try shifting just before the shift light comes on, maybe sooner. By the way the Veloster is one sexy beast. |
My Sonata took around 20k to start giving good mileage.
Now as to the onboard ave mpg gauge, mine reads about 10% higher than actual. |
Thanks I've read the hypermile tips.. I didn't see it in there but another members signature suggested diving without a shoe on for the gas pedal and so far that seems to help substantially since i typically wear boots to work.
6500 miles on the car so yes its still probably breaking in.. I'm really hoping it goes up since its very aero and light to begin with.. my commute is 120 miles both ways mostly freeway and highway with some stop lights My average gauge is consistently 1.5mpg high over actual too |
A Scangauge or Ultragauge will help to the tune of 10%, at least.

as a small side.
Change the oil 3-4 times in the first 10k. There are several studies showing that you can achieve the best break-in that way. especially if you plan on keeping it past 100k. I did this on my daughters Kia Sportage 2007 - V6. The blackstone oil test results show very little wear at 90k. |

I'm not certain of epa testing but i do know that my car is overrated compared to the Honda crz which is rated at 31/37 (lower than my Hyundai) and we all know that the crz and Hondas in general easily surpasses the epa.. something doesn't seem right.. Good news though by using dwl technique and no shoe I'm looking at a 44mpg tank so the technique is working excellent so far |
