New car- Project T-D-I-C (Volvo 760)

1 Attachment(s)
I gotcha m'self a new project! :D

A 1989, Volvo 760 Turbo Diesel Intercooler- Manual

It had 470,000 kms on the odo, and i bought it because it was a semi-ok steal.

The plan is to reregister it to a van by removing the rear seats in order to have a hugely smaller diesel tax (now its about 700usd a year, vs it will be 400usd or so after reregistration)

later it's Volkswagen straight-six turbo intercooled ICE will be swapped for some weird audi 5-pot diesel... some say for economy, some say for 50% increase in horsepower

http://ecomodder.com/forum/attachmen...0&d=1506857022

Fingie 10-01-2017 07:30 AM

The engine is a 2,4 truck diesel from volkswagen, used in the light truck/van Volskwagen LT... volvo used it too

Fingie 10-02-2017 04:04 PM

Mah friend fixed the clutch, now it shifts smoothly. (for now, the wire-clutched transmission will be thrown in the dumpster once he new engine goes in with a newer box, that is also a hydraulic clutch.

Fingie 10-03-2017 01:14 PM

now we swapped better seats in.

iikhod 10-04-2017 02:29 AM

I have only driven one 760 sedan, it was with the 2.8v6 engine+automatic, chugging around 15L/100km :D
Was planning on buying a 700-series diesel once but at the time they were overpriced for my taste

Good cars, however

Fingie 10-04-2017 12:56 PM

yeah, this feel sturdy even if it's neglected a bit. It seems it has a LSD. it's an ex-nivomat, after all.

freebeard 10-04-2017 05:09 PM

Clutch... seats... things are moving fast. It sounds like a VW motor in a 'bank vault'.

I also got a diesel recently, it's ten years older, non-turbo, but I like it. First thing I did was fold the rear seat so I can sleep in the back, but the bottom cushion folded up against the back of the front seats makes it hard to get out the front, and there is no inner hatch release. I want to pull the whole seat and make a flat platform. Swing-door material (aluminum-skinned plywood) is $100 per sheet; maybe I can find a use (box van) swing-door.

cRiPpLe_rOoStEr 10-05-2017 10:54 PM

IIRC its engine was still indirect-injection, good for some experiences with waste vegetable oils as an alternate fuel.

Fingie 10-16-2017 04:22 PM

Now it has a exhaust :D a bit closer to completion.

Also, we'll get better springs (cut springs right now, not good)

cRiPpLe_rOoStEr 10-16-2017 11:35 PM

IF you eventually lower it, don't cut the original springs. That's a half-ass job that does harm the safety.

freebeard 10-17-2017 12:25 AM

Does it have A-arms or what? My Macpherson struts are adjustable, I could return it to the lowest [or stock] setting at any time.

aand it's running on the road. :turtle:

thermostat changed and my buddy got the ignition electrics fixed. Also the horns and radio, some soldering must be done to the cluster so the lights will work and change sensor for water temp

already put 500km on it already and it seems to run well.

MPG will be calculated soon.
gearbox is a bit hard-shifted, but it's gotta hold until i get the 2.5TDI installed, then i'll get a M90 gearbox

Fingie 12-07-2017 03:00 AM

and now the temp sensor works!

radio too.

Just some smoothing out soldering faults in the gauge cluster.

mileage doesn't seem ultra bad, judging from the fuel meter. It also seems my car has a limited slip differential.

Fingie 12-11-2017 02:27 PM

Mileage seems to be something like 24Mpg, LOL.

Albeit i've pretty much floored it all the time :/ gotta lure out the fixes

That massive power has to come from somewhere :D

Once had a land cruiser bj75, it gulped 12L/100km even if you'd drop it from an airplane :p

Fingie 12-11-2017 07:00 PM

it also seems it has the short rear diff

cRiPpLe_rOoStEr 12-11-2017 08:10 PM

It does seem quite thirsty for a Diesel.

Would it be possible to fit some flip-n-fold seats or jump-seats for occasional passenger transport while keeping it registered as a van?

Presumably the side-facing ones usually found in the wheelchair spot in urban transit buses might not be accepted by the office of vehicle registry there, so maybe something similar to the 3rd-row seating of the 1st-gen Fiat Doblò could be used.

due to regulations, no seats are allowed in the "cargo" area

Fingie 12-17-2017 08:38 PM

Got nice mileage by driving calmly on the highway in the cold finnish winter :O driving highway at 50mph/80kmh because of winter speed limit. i am already VERY satisfied with current mileage. Can't wait how well it'll be

Bureaucracy sucks.

true, but the gov wants it's taxes

our yearly car tax has been "temporary" for 60 years now! :D

freebeard 12-18-2017 05:12 PM

How are they about paint on the inside of the windows?

Makes me wonder if either painting on the inside of the windows at the trunk area or replacing them with sheetmetal could qualify for a van registration while retaining the rear seats, even though a bulkhead could be required to provide a phisical barrier between the cargo area and the cabin (maybe just a wire mesh that could be bolted-on). That would be quite similar to some crew-cab vans that Argentinians and Uruguayans seem to love.

Now, would that approach be legal?

Fingie 12-19-2017 11:57 AM

a van here can have glass sides. but a normal car-based van just cannot have more than 1 row of seats. For example, toyota Hi-aces are 3-seaters but classify as a van

Indeed. Well, it seems like Finland is quite more complicated when it comes to bureaucracy than some other countries in the European Union such as Spain and Portugal.

But the HiAce is not car-based.

Oh man, tell me about it

Yea, it isn't but i didn't have any good examples of 3-seat-front-row cars. Well, some american cars are 3-seated and they can be registered as light vans

IIRC certain small cars can be registered as vans in Portugal, including small ones such as the Fiat Punto, as long as they have no more than 4 seats.

I'm aware that some regional variants of European-designed cars had bench seats in countries like Brazil at least until the '80s.

Wagon got new springs, Awesome!

also, new brake parts.

the exhaust is being worked on

But it has it's small dings here and there

Straight sidepipe? :D

syncro_user 01-21-2018 03:05 AM

My side-exit exhaust went through inspection every time without question, well worth doing if you're thinking about it. Saw about 0.3LHK improvement in consumption at the same time - plus it sounded rude!

If you've got a turbo you want to hear it right?

Fingie 01-24-2018 03:59 AM

straigt to rear, actually

i also drove 1000km on monday to Helsinki and back. :turtle:

I don't like driving in big cities.

also, the trams are a headache, we don't have them elsewhere :D

was a bit hard to remember from my driver's ED

iikhod 01-25-2018 12:50 AM

Same here, that's why i live in a small town :D

How was your consumption on that longer trip?

Nowadays some small towns also have problems that we would see more frequently in big cities, including traffic jams :turtle:

about 7,1 l/100km

Fingie 02-08-2018 03:29 AM

average consumption has been about 7,4-7,5.

when the fuel light goes on, i refuel it with 20€ and drive 'til the light goes on again

got original volvo Thule roof rails, not good for consumption but oh well

Fingie 02-12-2018 04:44 AM

TDI swap getting closer, my friend is rewelding a oil pan to fit the TDI and the electrics have been sorted

Nice. BTW what are you considering to do with the old engine?

prolly use it as payment for my friend for performing the swap, and he will probably touch up the old block and sell it to some boater

Interesting. Since that old engine has indirect-injection, that sounds inviting to do some tests with vegetable oil as an alternate fuel. I've been aware that at least one oyster farmer in a coastal city here in Brazil is using vegetable oil in a boat.
