New Car- Vaz 2111

https://scontent-waw1-1.xx.fbcdn.net...2e&oe=5636D423

Hi, it's been a while.

I bought this car, a Vaz 2111, a basic-level station wagon.

Made in russia by AvtoVaz, a car for bad road conditions.

It's a 2003 year model, it's a very, VERY basic model.

No airbag(not even optional) no ABS, not even a radio (yet) but it has a standard OBD to pass E.U emissions requirement

It uses 33mpg @ 75mph, the aerodynamics is the reason here, as the engine's design was about 20 year old technology.

Spares cost next to nothing.

It has a 1,5 l 8-valve engine with 70Bhp, and the car weighs around 1020kilograms.

I am planning to mod a warm air intake, and maybe block the grille (easy job)

The positive thing is, that this car can handle ethanol to about 40% without any problems or mods :D

This car is also super-easy to fix, for example the Camshaft belt takes half an hour to change :)

We'll see what we get ouf of it.

Oh, and the engine's electronics is made by bosch.

Looks like a nice practical unit.

Seems to be the same engine which was made by Fiat in Brazil. BTW is it fitted with a single-point or a multi-point EFI?

I guess it can handle more than 40% ethanol :D

Wikipedia says this about the Lada 111 / VAZ-2111:
Quote:

VAZ-2111 station wagon offers more opportunities for baggage than the sedan or hatchback, but it is a city car with "soft" suspension and is not designed for operation with an overload, or regular use on bad roads.
Sorry :o take care on those roads.

I don't know why you say that... Can you explain why you think it makes no sense?

It runs on the same platform of the sedan and the hatchback, so a "softier" suspension doesnt't make sense at all. Anyway, wagons are also supposed to be more on the "utilitarian" side, so they would actually be more prone to feature an improved suspension setup.

That's a spiffy little wagon. There are quite a few people here that would go for something like that. Best of luck with it!

Ah, it probably has the same suspension as the sedan, that's what they mean. And like other car types, most stations on the road carry just the driver and no luggage most of the time. In that light it does make sense.

Congrats on your new car.

A wagon is actually supposed to be more frequently subject to overloading...

With a mix of RE85 and 90-octane gas (50/50) i calculated 26 MPG.:turtle:

and that was achieved with zero hypermiling tricks, driving mixed city/rural, and accelerating at WOT :snail:

and this sucker is great on bad roads of finland, the wikipedia article is bs.

the feeling of a "soft" suspension comes from a long suspension travel.

i can drive over speed bumps at 20 MPH :p

i have droven this car at 25mph on a forest road and the suspension never "hits bottom".

maybe with a full load the suspension is too soft, but i rarely have anything over 200Kg in my car.

Also the serviceability is great. Me and my friend changed the belts for the camshaft and alternator in an hour at the first time, now i could manage it in half an hour  i also installed a radio, but it cuts off, so it must have a loose connection or a bad ground somewhere.

theres no ABS, Power steering, or airbags. The only thing that can go off is the engine light, and it's on already

(the car runs normally, but the fuel enrichment is too high due to ethanol, hence the light :D)

And rooster, it's the same 8V engine samara/2108 has, so the engine design was already 28 years old when the car was made in 2003

grille block is one of the things i've considered, and maybe rear skirts.

the car would look futuristic or sci-fi-ish with couple of aero mods :)

Fingie 08-21-2015 05:52 AM

Also the rear muffler broke off, it had heavily rusted at the seam, so it was basically just hanging in the rubber bushings, when i drove in a pothole :D i need to get a new muffler soon, now it sounds like a military truck and reduced consumption almost with half a litre :), and the muffler had it's insides loose when i examined it

I looked it up, the engine's Multi-Point-Injectef, with all the components made by BOSCH

and because it's a export model, it has a immobilizer with a separate "dongle"
that you wave at the antenna in order to start it

if some petty criminal threatens me to hand over the keys, he sure as hell won't not start the car without it ;) unless he knows how to bypass the gas pump relay

sweet ride! I love it!

euromodder 08-21-2015 11:17 AM

Basic motoring - Russian style
Only stops running if you nuke it.

Wagons are a great compromise between size and versatility.
Not too big or too much unused space with has a severedrag & weight penalty , but enough space when you need it.

It might be the same old engine we know in Brazil as "Fiasa", originally designed by Aurelio Lampredi. At least the Brazilian version had an inverted belt tensioner, which is often blamed for the timing belt often becoming more prone to a rupture.

https://h-a.d-cd.net/e34638cs-960.jpg

It is this engine, that mine has (minus the yellow bar between the struts :D)

Car started to sputter on full load, solved by buying a New set of NGK sparkplugs for a combined price of around 20 US dollars. The DENSO plugs in my Celica costed 60 dollars

(although the Celica's plugs are supposed to last about as long as the Cam belt, 100,000kms opposed to Vaz's 60,000km belt interval. The plugs last only 30,000).

Driven it for about 1200miles now without any major problems, not bad for a car that had a price of 270Euros and is of a very cheap quality :D

I am planning on some aero mods, grille block could be easily achieved. A vacuum gauge is waiting for inspiration, even if i've planned to buy a OBD tester/Scangauge.

My current economical situation does not give me a chance, yet :/ Soon i have to look into smuggling tobacco products from sweden

Started a New proper thread about my car

cRiPpLe_rOoStEr 09-08-2015 11:33 AM

Its engine looks identical to the early Brazilian Fiat ones.

Fingie 10-12-2016 12:40 PM

Holy moly, it's over a year now. The only thing changed is that I preactically partied away all my inheritance and bought a all-trac celica :D
