New full underbelly panel for my 93 festiva

Finished it this evening when I got home.

Materials used.
1 1/2 pieces of coroplast ($17)
1" tornilo screws (1box $4)
1" diameter washers (on hand)
20' of flooring metal ( had it on hand)
10' of L shaped aluminum track (had it on hand)
Card board used to pattern (leftover from a recent tub install)
Utility knife (I use this for work so no cost to me here)
Time spent= 8 hours
Total money invested= $21.00
Miles to recoup investment= ?

Upon taking it out for its first test drive it was awesome how little throttle it needed to maintain 60+ mph. It feels similar to the throttle I was using at 57 before just as a guess. Hopefully this will put me on my way to reaching that 60+mpg tank that has so narrowly eluded me thus far.

I like the sound of almost no throttle to keep it at 60 mph :)

Sweet!

Me too!

Nice work, but the middle of it looks a bit loose. THe festiva isn't very aerodynamic to begin with, but the low throttle at 60mph is encouraging. Keep up the good work.

looks good, nice job. More Pics needed! is that looking at the front?

Its not lose, it just has a few things that it is being forced out by slightly. I felt it would be more advantageous to allow it to push out (less than an inch and secure) rather than make cutouts to allow for pure conformity. I guess time will tell ;)

Since you asked nicely ;)

I see a cutout for the exhaust pipe, but how close does it come to the muffler itself?

There is 4 inches of fiberglass insulation in between it and the coro. So.. 4 inches.

i'll bet with the addition of a Kammback you'll easily be right there!! :{)

This is the closest I've gotten to doing a Kammback :) A little cleaner separation and I still have full visibility out my rear allowing for little interior side mirrors. If I do anything else it will be a full boat tail!

Nice work! Aren't you worried about the exhaust pipe melting the plastic?

I wrapped it in fire retardant fiber glass. I ended up adding some venting in the rear as the summer temps require better air flow, and it can cause issues with the gas tank becoming a safety hazard if the temps go to high.

My coroplast under panelling gets within 2 inches of my muffler and I have had no problems with plastic melting in 9 years and almost 200,000 miles of driving. Coroplast is made of polypropylene, which has a melting point of 266 degrees F.

A few questions...

-What exact type of fiberglass are you using?
-Is it going to retain moisture?
-Pics?

I ask because you might find some issues with it retaining a lot of moisture and causing advanced corrosion on your exhaust piping (and possibly the body of the vehicle itself). This will also keep a lot more heat on your exhaust piping, which has it's ups and downs (though I'm not really clear on the downs, honestly. A bit of research might be needed here).

I think you meant: Fire Retardant. :)

(lol, reminds me of this..)

Nice one man, hope you don't mind me copying you again!

Hopefully I'll get time to do mine this weekend. I can already feel a small difference in the length of coast just from the wheel skirts, so I think with a full belly pan I might see a big increase in the "glides"

I have everything but the plastic, and I can get pallet-sized heavy duty plastic sheets for 2 bucks each, so I'll be another 6 bucks into modding at that point.
Planning on doing a 3-piece pan, with a couple of inches of overlap and a small gap for fluid drain at each section (in case I hit high water, my area floods alot).

I'll post pics of the finished product. I posted the wheel skirt addition here somewhere the other day

White faced batt insulation. I checked on moisture after a few drives during heavy rainfall and it was damp but not soaked so I didn't worry about it after that. After having it on for a while it seemed to be retaining more moisture, so i think a better solution is needed.
