New guy here! (with '84 Toyota Celica Gts to mod ... instead of driving Suburban)
 

I just picked up a 1984 Toyota Celica Gts 5spd for $600. Woohoo something that gets better mileage than my 92 suburban 4x4.

I wannt to keep this car fun to drive but economical. The 22re motor will probably stay as will the w58 trans. I replaced the original battery with a honda battery. The plan is to get the cars weight down from 2870 lbs to about 2670. I havent weighed it yet so I am just going on manufacture specs. Planed areo mods, air dam in front spoiler/s in rear, its a fast back so I may put louvers on the back window. epa rates this car @ 26 on the highway and the plan is to get 30+

I was poking around under the hood today and found two vacum lines missing, that could be the cause of the hard start and poor idling!

You can also track your mileage improvements there. Have you started driving it yet?

Sounds like you're going over basic maintenance - good start. A vaccum leak can lead to terrible mileage too, depending on which line it's in.

I havent started driving it yet, not yet registered just working on cleaning the interior up and diagnosing the poor starting.

Doing some research I found according to my vin I have a 6.7 ring gear w/ 3.36 ratio.
Not as high geared as my old town car 3.27 but combined with a .78 over drive it should do pretty good.

The tires are dry rotted so I am going to need some new ones before I can drive it and I found a bent lip on one of the rims:mad:

It seems a 225/60r14 is a very hard size to come by. :mad:
Only tire I have been able to find is bfg's muscle car tire. Any suggestions for tire size keeping the overall dia close would help guys I dont mind going down to a 205 or so but I have 7 inch rims on this car and dont want to go much narrower.

All else being equal, narrower will give you better MPG from reduced aero losses (narrower = reduced frontal area & Cd). Something to consider while you're shopping.

Pull the stock rims off and go to a lighter, narrower rim that can will allow you to run the most common tires, put on some low rolling resistance tires. The folks that like the old school Japanese cars like your stockers.

The 22RE engine has a very strong following still, so getting stuff for it won't be a problem. Good grunt motor; I'd put it back stock with some detail changes like adjusting the timing for best results.

Love that bodystyle. But then again, I'm old school like that.
