New hybrid from VW - "Up! Lite" 70 mpg (US) hwy
|

Very nice! Thats pretty much a ecodriver's dream car, diesel with regenerative braking AND low Cd (.237). 70 mpg highway sounds nice to me. It even looks good.
Other specs: .8L turbo diesel engine (51 hp) 7 speed tranny 65 hp electric motor (10 hp continuous) lithium battery pack 1532 lbs (695 kgs) http://ecomodder.com/forum/attachmen...p;d=1259787911 |
Interesting. Looks more like a rendering than a photo, though. (Is it a real car?)
Going to read about it now... Haha: Quote:
Nice to see them pushing the idea out there though. Gets people thinking, talking about efficiency. Meanwhile, EcoModders are DOING something about efficiency! |
So they are FINALLY coming out with some 4 seat cars (at least in concept form) that begin to approach, but not yet surpass, my car's highway mileage. It does look like it has a bit less cargo space than the aerocivic. Much better aero than on most cars, although I can see considerable room for improvement. It'll be interesting to see how many of the ideas on this concept actually end up on a production vehicle.

Its real.
La 2009 Volkswagen Up Lite — Autoblog It has windshield wipers and a real interior therefore its a production car in disguise. But knowing VW the awd, hybrid, carbon fiber and weight claim is pure vaporware. Remember the old UP concept that was supposed to be rear engine, rear wheel drive? Also vapor ware. This looks like a derivative of the Polo with a lowered roof. |

•In coast-down, activated by the driver taking his or her foot off the gas pedal (car coasts, TDI engine is shut off). •For shorter distances of up to 2 km (1.2 miles), e.g. in residential areas, the E-motor can power the Up! Lite all by itself. In this case, a lithium-ion battery supplies the energy. |

It looks like a real-world capable, appeals-to-the-slowly-waking-up-typical-
consumer version of the L1: Attachment 4900 Which wouldn't be a bad thing. |

Here's the ABG post on the VW Up! Lite:
LA 2009: Volkswagen Up! Lite Concept teases with practical, lightweight innovation — Autoblog Green It is a "real" car: http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog....-lite-live.jpg http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog....-lite-live.jpg http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog....-lite-live.jpg Video cameras! http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog....-lite-live.jpg Less than 1,600 pounds, 0.8L 2-cylinder diesel with electric motor, active cooling grill opening. 0.237Cd, 4 seats ... I love it. Quote:

GIGANTIC video cameras... wtf?
|
No, that's a closeup -- check the other photos! They are pretty small, actually...
|
96mpg Combined!
BTW, the ABG article has the wrong conversion on the FE: 2.44L/100km = 96mpg Combined.
|
Looks like they are incorporating elements from the 1L.
Published l x w x h specs put Up within an inch or two of Metro specs. Sure looks lower in the pic though... the 18" wheels are going to make the proportions a bit different. I like it... too bad it's a VW. That = overpriced and high maintenance. |
Hello -
I could have a lot of fun with that car : http://ecomodder.com/forum/member-cf...lite-teeth.jpg CarloSW2 |

A 48kW electrical drive from a company not known for its solid electrics. Hmm...

check out that active grillblock! i love this as the body doesn't look all that strange either, just a normal modern hatchback |
Is Bosch the maker of the hybrid system, or Volvo?
|
"Active Thermal Management"... I like it. :D

Already posted! http://ecomodder.com/forum/showthrea...-us-11257.html

I think that it would be better as an BEV, or a plug in serial hybrid: eliminate the ultra-fancy 7-speed dual clutch transmission it currently has and increase the size of the electric motor, and use the 800cc diesel engine (or a smaller version of it!) to generate power to charge the battery. A bigger battery would be good, too.
The aero drag could be improved with (at least partial) rear wheel skirts, and a longer, slightly more tapered rear -- the "shoulders" should slope downwards (I think), etc. |
sorry posted to soon
|
Looks slick, though the interior (on the concept model anyway) has a look that won't age well, when actual people start actually climbing in and out of it and using it as the utility that cars are.
|
Subaru did the active grill block back in 86 too bad it never got past the concept.
http://subaruxt.com/forum/download/file.php?id=4447 kind of sad it's still only on a concept car. nice find! |
Yeah that 70 mpg number is a real snafu!
This thing could break 100 mpg EASILY. If TDIs with over twice the displacement and vehicle weight can crack 60 mpg without breaking much of a sweat than 70 mpg with this thing would be disastrously disappointing. If somehow VW is listening, I want mine with ~1.3L engine and ~100 HP. I will give up 10 mpg for some serious driving fun. I WANT. |
WOW Nice find, drool.
VW is all over it. I like everything about it. Other manufacters need to make notes. |
This car begs the question: if Honda's first generation Insight had been a little longer with 2 more seats, would it have had a different outcome?

IF it comes to America and IF the dealers don't immediately start their typical price gouging and IF it is widely available, I'll be visiting my VW dealer and trying one on :-)
I like it's looks and I really like it's economy. |

Like the Aptera, I'm thinking of this as just more vaporware till I see one for sale.

VW shows Cd value: 0.237 hybrid concept
VW unveils the Up! Lite concept car at the L.A auto show. It uses a 2 cylinder diesel and electric drive motors. It also has a very smooth tapered body style, rear view cameras instead of mirrors, automatic self adjusting grill opening and flattish 18" wheels for 70 mpg highway. "The image of the car body with its clean lines, as though sculpted from a block of aluminium, underscores just how fascinating a car tuned to aerodynamic perfection can look."
L.A. Auto Show - UP! Lite Concept (I originally missed this thread and re-posted in aerodynamics) |
Interesting note the milage numbers do not agree. The unit converter at TDI club gives a milage of 96MPG for 2.44L/100km.
That sounds more like it. I would suppose the L/100km is the more accurate of the two as that is the number they work with in Europe and somebody screwed up the conversion. So that leaves a really good impression about the Germans math ability. What to do now? After already spending the money for a splashy rollout do they admit an error in the engineering calculations? Kind of funny and sad all at the same time. 100mpg almost is a way catchier number |
Hi,
I think the Combined mileage is the higher number, and the Highway mileage is the 70mpg. |
I want to build a diesel streamliner that is like a cross between the Aptera and the VW one liter project.
I have a suspicion that mine will be done before you can buy this one. I have to completely remodel my house first, which will take 2-3 years, then another two years of spare time to piece together the prototype. Jeez I hope I'm wrong. Mine will seat 3 in a row the long way for best/lowest frontal area. If it doesn't break 100 mpg at 50 mph I will be very disappointed. Finest regards, troy |
Would it be easier to re-engine a Metroflyswift with the 1l VW Polo 3cyl engine ?
